(am I correct that a player that is optioned cannot be called up for 10 days?).
Correct, except that he could be called up sooner if it's to replace a pitcher who goes on the DL.

My theory, and if I'm right I like the move: Guzman will get two starts to stretch out in Iowa, then after 10 days when he's eligible he will be called back up and replace Miller (who's continuing to pitch himself out of the rotation today). In fact, that DAMN WELL BETTER be the explanation because it's the only justification for sending Guzman down. He's been excellent his last couple of appearances, and you don't send him down for 10 days when he'd only be out of commission for 2 days after pitching last night. If the reason weren't to stretch Guzman out the Ohman to the DL move would have been done to make room for Pie rather than rewarding Guzman for his excellent pitching by giving him an all-expenses-paid trip to beautiful Des Moines, Iowa. :D

There's nothing wrong with a paid trip to Iowa. In regards to Miller, I think he should bring his arm back a little farther to try and get some more umph on the ball. Might get a couple more miles per hour out of the fastball instead of what looks like short arming everything.

I haven't read much of the thread or the media reports but do we know for sure that Guzman is being sent down so he can be stretched out to be a starter or is that just the hope right now? I would love it if it was true but I would like to know for sure whether its a quote on the radio or from an article.

I think it's just the hope. It just doesn't make sense to me to send him down if that weren't the case considering how well he's been pitching.

Not just hope anymore.

"Guzman will move into the rotation at Iowa and likely will make two starts before the Cubs decide whether to bring him back as a starter. With an off-day on April 26, the Cubs will need their fifth starter only one more time until May 1 at Pittsburgh."

The writing is on the wall, Mr. Miller.

Not to bring the idea down any, but you're just quoting Paul Sullivan's speculations. If this has basis in what he has heard from a team official, he certainly didn't present it that way.

I agree that the only other explanation for the move is unparalleled ignorance, but nothing would shock me with this organization. I guess I'm just saying it's still just hope and speculation.

Yeah, that's the way I read it too. Just speculation...(though I certainly hope he's right).

So, I just saw the Sportscenter highlights of the game. They didn't refer to Pie by the pronunciation that seems obvious, but neither did they do it the correct way. Instead, it was two syllables-the first syllable was Pie, and then they added the syllable that is actually at the end of his name, the a sound. so it's Pie-a. It sounds kind of ridiculous, and he said it at least 4 times during the highlights.

I see the Cubs sending Guzman down as more of a function of convenience than anything else. He had pitched 3 innings the game before, and the Cubs needed a CF right away. He wasn't going to be available the next day anyway, so no harm in sending him down to get an extra OF on the roster until the Cubs decide whether Soriano needs to be DL'd.

Either way, most Chicago newspapers are now saying Guzman will be going down to AAA to start so he'll get stretched out. Hopefully it is to push Miller out.

i think we all know that miller is due for two halfway decent starts and guzman is due to give up 12 weak groundball singles to crappy AAA hitters, thus leaving miller in the rotation for another month at least.

It was 2 innings. Dempster came in for the 9th. He pitched 3 innings in an earlier outing, but this one was 2 innings. I doubt they'd send him down for a minimum of 10 days because he couldn't pitch one day. I'm in the camp that thinks it is to stretch him out to replace Miller.

I was really impressed with Pie's patience at the plate yesteday.

Considering patience has been his biggest knock all the way through our system, it was a very pleasant surprise to see him taking some pitches, while at the same time being aggressive. I would like to see a slight adjustment to his swing though - too much of a fly ball swing, not enough of a line-drive swing.

Like C-Patt, he's a middle of the order player trying to be a leadoff guy...hopefully he adjusts better than C-Patt did.

Eventually the long term plan is for both Soriano and Pie in the lineup. I'm sure Sori will stay at 1 and Pie anywhere b/t 2-6.

His patience has improved quite a bit this this season (though it was just a few weeks of minor league games, but he has been talking about how the Cubs have been emhasizing it).

Well, if you assume that his outing on Monday would be the equivalent of a side session, then he'd be able to start Thursday. If you want four-days rest, he'd throw on Saturday. But those are only guesses, who knows what the I-Cubs are going to do.
