The idea of getting rid of Wood just to get rid of him is beyond stupid.

What's stupid is leaving this injury prone guy on this team. He's always injured. Watch, he'll come back for 2 weeks and then go back on the DL again.

And if he does? Then the team will have two weeks of Wood and two weeks of a pitcher like Cherry. Since Wood is better than Cherry when healthy, isn't it better to have 2 weeks of Wood and 2 weeks of Cherry than 4 weeks of Cherry?

The title of this thread should be a sticky and we just update the date of injury and the amount of time out.

It is not for me to use those words I have said so many times to discribe him. I'll leave it at Itold you so ](*,)

wow, you predicted that wood would be hurt? you're obviously very smart.

Do you feel better now?

a little.

What exactly did your post accomplish?

it's a message board. nobody's posts accomplish anything.

And where exactly does that hurt us?

The loss is not having Wood for the time he's out due to injury. Getting rid of him just for the sake of getting rid of him only exacerbates that problem by not having him at all.

Agreed. There's a long season ahead. If he's legitimately injured, he should be healthy enough to contribute at some point. I still think this situation is fishy; Hendry and Piniella spoke with him a couple of days ago. I think they convinced him that needs more innings (they would also like to save him from the usually lower temps of early April). Wood going on the DL is the perfect answer to the short term bullpen issue. He also refused to speak to the media... Guzman is going to make the 25 man roster.

I don't think there is any need to concoct a fake injury to justify a stint on teh DL to start the season. They can legitimately say he was hindered by his earlier injury and needs time to rehab.

Not to mention the fact that pitching in a Cactus league game changed the date they can make the DL placement effective. If they truly wanted him to go on the DL they would have had him rehabing in minor league camp, so they could have called him up earlier if needed.

I have to say I'm totally shocked. Kerry should be brought up on embezzlement charges once his time with the Cubs is finally done. He's stolen money for years. Blue Cross and Blue Shield at least waited till the end of spring training to start this year.

Not after he's been saying all week that he was fine!

I don't think they are thinking about that at all. He's only pitched 5 innings all ST so they aren't worry about back dating. I think Piniella wants Guzman as the long reliever in the short term.

Not a surprise.

So it sounds as though the bullpen is pretty much set as

Dempster

Howry

Wuertz

Eyre

Ohman

Cotts

Guzman

and numerous press articles indicate that Guzman is on the bubble to be sent to Iowa if Wood rejoins the team. How Cotts pitches may affect who is sent down.

I'm foreseeing a lot of innings piling up for this bullpen. Although I'd love to have the flexibility of an extra bench guy, I suspect the extra arm will be needed, especially early on.

"We're not worried about Opening Day right now," Hendry said. "Let's be cognizant of getting him right, see what people have to say when they look at him today."

Wood was not available for comment. Hendry said Wood was disapointed after working during the offseason to prepare for 2007.

"He's feels badly that he's not 100 percent," Hendry said. "Hopefully we'll get him right. And hopefully it will not be significant.

"It's not about helping us next Monday as much as it's about helping us over the long haul."

So they are putting him on the DL before finding out if the doctor says there's a real problem? OK

Anyway, they have Guzman ready and that's all that's important right now.

I agree, it should, but that doesn't appear to be the case:

Piniella has repeatedly said he plans to take the 12 best pitchers when camp breaks, but he's in a quandary because Neal Cotts is struggling.

Cotts has been scored upon in four of his six Cactus League appearances and hasn't pitched in an A game since March 19. He has a 7.20 ERA, yielding 20 hits in only 10 innings.

How does Piniella evaluate Cotts' spring?

"He's been throwing the ball better," Piniella said. "If you're talking about the numbers—ERA, hits per innings pitched and those sort of things—no, they haven't been particularly impressive. But with a lot of these kids, you look at the back of the bubble-gum card and it tells you a little different story. So you can't just go totally on just spring training."

The back of Cotts' bubble-gum card reveals a 5.17 ERA in 2006, which made him expendable to the White Sox. It doesn't break down the season, but Cotts also posted a 9.87 ERA after the All-Star break.

In 2005, Cotts was an instrumental part of the White Sox's championship season, going 4-0 with a 1.94 ERA.

The Cubs intend to give him every opportunity to return to his '05 form after acquiring him from the Sox for David Aardsma.

I expect Cotts to make the team out of spring training. I don't expect him to stink all year and remain on the team.

Do you expect him to stink all year and be removed, or not stink and remain on the team?

I'm hoping for the latter, but am expecting the former.
