What does Wood really give you when he comes back anyway? He's been injured the past couple of year with significant injuries. If it's not the shoulder, it's the tricep, not the tricep, no problem it's the elbow. The guy is as injury prone as it gets. I'd rather have somebody reliable out there instead of yo yoing other players to come up and down when Wood has an injury flame up. Wood is a shell of his former self and the Cubs would be better if they moved on without him. Enough is enough with this guy. He's made more money being on the DL than us would make in a life time.

and he'll be making more money this year if he's cut than most of us would make in a lifetime.

he's starting the year off on the DL, so no yo-yoing will occur with young pitchers. just admit your emotions are what is causing you to want him to be cut.

That has something to do with it. I'm an emotional fan. But that doesn't change the fact that this guy has always been on the DL since 2004 and cannot be relied upon even as a reliever.

and neither one of them is being counted on for anything at this point. so no harm is done by having them on the DL, and anything they add is considered an unexpected bonus. releasing them just b/c you're mad that they've been hurt accomplishes nothing.

It's bad, in that any setback is bad, especially to a shoulder we already know is both fragile and damaged. What's not so bad is that sources tell me that pain is not in the back of the shoulder, but rather nearer the triceps where Wood has already had problems this spring...he's still stepping across his body, and it still looks like scapular dyskinesis could be an issue beyond the triceps and damaged cuff. It's still unclear how long this will sideline Wood, but Opening Day is out for sure. Whether he makes it back and can hold up as a reliever remains to be seen.

Bah...What does he know?

Trib[/url]"]MESA, Ariz. -- Lou Piniella said Tuesday morning he heard "encouraging" news about the condition of Kerry Wood, though he had no specifics about his latest shoulder injury.

"A lot of the soreness and pain is gone," Piniella said. "We'll continue to evaluate him over the next few days. Whatever he can do, we'll allow 'em to do."

Wood was evaluated by a team physician Monday. The Cubs are referring to Wood's injury as "shoulder fatigue" and he's being treated with antibiotics. He'll be evaluated "day-to-day."

"It's in the shoulder," Piniella said without elaborating.

But while Piniella said Wood is feeling much better, he's still not able to throw off a mound.

"Maybe, maybe (he'll throw) on the side," Piniella said. "Maybe."

This really makes you wonder on whether Kerry will be healthy enough to even contribute to the team this year. He's only pitched in a handful of innings so far this spring and is still having trouble with that shoulder.

Maybe this is just the moron in me, but why is Kerry being given antibiotics for shoulder fatigue? Unless he has some sort of infection we don't know about.

Well, the possibly counter to that is that despite offseason routines, this is the start of the year and he might be rusty getting back into the swing of things. Ideally he'll get stronger and more durable as the season goes along...relatively speaking.

Good grief. There's never anything straightforward, is there?

Probably anti-inflamatory meds for swelling.

Releasing Wood now would be the stupidest move ever in the history of stupid moves. We're already on the hook for the contract. Even if we weren't, if it were a Todd Walker situation where we could get out by releasing him...it's just one and a half million dollars. That's half a Hank Blanco. Do you really release him and take the chance of him reemerging a Cardinal for half a Hank Blanco? I think not...

Keep him in extended spring training, rehab him like the hundred other hurt players in baseball, and see what happens. If he can't come back, no harm no foul.

We paid Wade Miller as much for 5 games last year, and then resigned him. I don't think we're wasting anything by just giving Woody a chance.

The article was update to clarify that it's anti-inflammatories:

The reality is...Kerry will be healthy again and come up. Get hurt, go back on the DL. And away we go again...

Kerry's arm/shoulder cannot put up with the everyday strain of pitching. Prediction: he will retire at the end of the year. Next job (as Stoney predicted): selling cars.

I don't question his heart, but physically - he's done. Maybe he can drive the Cubs Caravan bus next year?

even if he is finished pitching in the majors, i think kerry wood has long past the stage of having to ever work again to earn a living.

I doubt it. Very few people can hold on to that kind of money, and even that large of a principle can go much faster than people think.

I'd love the opportunity to have all that money and prove you wrong!

You'd be wrong.
