Getting rid of them for being "distractions" (for who, the fans? Who cares?) is, quite frankly, the most ridiculous reason I've seen for dumping them thus far.

Absofreakinglutely. I'm so sick about hearing what a distraction it is. To suggest there is value in just "getting rid" of Kerry Wood insinuates that the rest of the team will suddenly play better because they got rid of him. That he's some sort of cancer that holds other players back. The 40 man roster spot is worthless, as it would just be used on some hack.

The Cubs, right now, have a very talented, but oft-injured asset, and he doesn't cost much. Just because frustrated fans think they can get over these guys with a release or injury settlement doesn't mean there would be any added value to the team itself.

I'm not disappointed, I quit counting on Wood a long time ago.

The tone regarding Wood in todays telecast is very ominous, but maybe I'm just reading too much into it.

And nobody needs to count on him...the team has planned around him. If he produces, awesome, it's cake. If he doesn't, hey, the team goes on.

I got the same feeling. I don't think you're reading too much into it at all. Lou didn't sound very optimistic about things.

"We're not worried about Opening Day right now," Hendry said. "Let's be cognizant of getting him right, see what people have to say when they look at him today."

Wood was not available for comment. Hendry said Wood was disapointed after working during the offseason to prepare for 2007.

"He's feels badly that he's not 100 percent," Hendry said. "Hopefully we'll get him right. And hopefully it will not be significant.

"It's not about helping us next Monday as much as it's about helping us over the long haul."

So they are putting him on the DL before finding out if the doctor says there's a real problem? OK

Anyway, they have Guzman ready and that's all that's important right now.

Good to know that they don't spellcheck their articles before posting them.

Good catch! I've seen other misspellings there.

When Kerry returns from the DL I think we'll find out pretty quickly if he's still capable of performing. If he breaks down again within the first 2 weeks I'd say he's most likely not going to do anything worthwhile this year. By June we should have a good idea of whether he should just quit baseball altogether or try to keep going.

Some things never change. It sucks to see him hurt yet again, but I can't say that I'm surprised.

Any word as to how this will affect the final spot in the bullpen?

It looks like Guzman will benefit from this opening (Len mentioned it on today's game).

Could the people who want to dump Wood please give a reason for doing so? I don't think I have understood your position...

You see, all I can think of is that you want him gone because you are angry, upset, tired of being disappointed, annoyed by hype, ect. But those are emotions. Surely these posters aren't arguing that these emotions matter in a way that ought to influence decisions about player personnel.

Right?

Nobody could be that stupid, right?

Paul Sullivan is on The Score saying that the injury to Wood is going to hurt the team. GIVE ME A BREAK! This guy is an idiot! Now he's speculating that Wood's career is over. Wow, I didn't know Sullivan got his MD.

Oh yeah, he just said Carlos isn't signing with the Cubs and he could be traded at the deadline. AND THAT HE COULD SIGN WITH THE SOX. This guy is a tool doing nothing more than creating tabloid news!

The TRIFECTA!

Not totally related to the issue at hand, but I've found that no matter what circumstances compel you to ask this question, the answer is always yes.

Yeah, the Sox are going to outbid everyone else for Z. Gimme a break!

I think we unfortunately already know the answer to that question. He's had three setbacks already in camp, and I just don't see it getting any better. Why do we keep kidding ourselves that he might regain his former ability?

That's actually good to hear. Hopefully he uses the time to show that he's worthy of being on the big club. I'm hoping he can take either Miller's or Marquis's spot in the rotation.

KW and Ozzie's pride alone would prevent that from happening, not to mention Jerry's pocketbook.

I'm confident that a deal will get done before Opening Day. But if it doesn't, and Carlos reaches free agency, there's no way he'll sign with an AL team.

Is there any other club that has invested more time and money on a pitcher that has been on the DL 11 times in 10 years?

You've been reading Gordon Wittenmyer. Wood hasn't even pitched in MLB for 10 years...

Anyway, anything he gives is gravy.

It pisses me off that Kerry Wood is a Multi-Millionaire and never actively practices his profession and I sit behind a desk and make jack.

Be grateful, at least you don't have to stand on concrete like factory workers or Wal-Mart employees (ask one why they don't have stools), or work outside in 90+ degree temperatures like migrant farm workers, or risk death every single day like crab fisherman, or spend all your days driving a truck seeing your family seldom or never, or cleaning up other peoples' most disgusting garbage as a sanitation worker or janitor.

I trust I've made my point. People should be grateful for what they have instead of jealous of others. Move this to rants if need be.

EDIT: And it's not like Kerry is trying to get hurt. He gave the Cubs a big discount on this year's contract. I do fault Hendry for relying on him and Prior so heavily for so many years prior to this season, but it's hardly fair to blame Kerry for just signing the contract Jim offered.

Yeah, it's hard to stomach at times. Here he is making more money this season than I'll make in the next 15 years, and he isn't actually doing anything to earn it.

Pardon me, he started in 98 which would make this his 9th year, which makes 11 trips to the DL even more sick.

Sorry for the egregious error.

And by the way, I've never read Gordon.

Anyway, gravy is hard to give from the DL.

Actually, he's only pitched in 8 seasons (he missed all of 1999 to TJS). Whittenmyer, of the Suntimes, has been falsely reporting that Wood will be on the DL for the 11th time in 10 seasons...
