If our 5th bench player is a middle infielder, as expected, who's being looked at through trade?

I'd imagine our trade material is probably Wade Miller, Will Ohman, Novoa maybe even Marshall off the 40-man.

This isn't likely to be someone who clearly starts over DeRosa/Theriot, rather another piece to mix in and flexibility to start both DeRosa and Theriot at times. At the same time, I'm looking for someone much better than our options of Cedeno and Perez.

Huge bonuses for speed and/or ability to hit LH pitching.

Personally, I think another MI that can hit right handed pitching somewhat well would be better-Theriot and DeRosa are already both very good against left-handers.

Isn't Womack available?

That's true but I think of it more as him juxtaposed to the Jones/Theriot/Izturis, Ward, Floyd, Catcher he'll be on the bench with. He'll never be the guy you're looking to against a righty with several better choices but if Theriot was in already, then this guy would need to be who you want for a lefty.

Damian Jackson is available too. He was just released a day or two ago. :D

But Damian also stormed out and said he's done with baseball forever.

The Rockies are going with Tulowitzski at SS. That leaves Matsui, Carroll, and Barmes. One of those might be available.

Also, in Tampa the last utility spot is down to Upton or Harris. If it's Upton, Harris could be placed on waivers.

Those are a couple of possibilities.

Also, Rey Rnez could get let go by Seattle.

I hadn't read about that before, but checked CBS Sportsline and saw that after you mentioned it. Grady Little said Jackson respects their decision. :D

Interestingly, I saw both Jackson and Wilson play when they were in the minors. They played for Kinston, NC (Cleveland's high-A team) when I lived only 25 miles from there, so I went to a few games each year (now I live closer to AA-Carolina and AAA-Durham).

Tulo and Matsui will be starting, but I think the Rocks will keep Barmes and Carroll considering neither starter is a sure thing. I think they'll at least keep them for the first month or so.

Watch, the Cubs pick up Brendan Harris off of waivers just so Hendry can revel in the fact that he has both Harris and Murton on his team. He takes pictures with his arms draped over both of them laughing and emails them to Theo Epstein who promptly snaps a photo of himself wearing his world series ring and emails Jim right back. After sobering up, Hendry cuts Harris and gets serious about finding a decent reserve middle infielder.

Seriously, the Cubs seem to have a surplus of pitching that should be good enough to bring in a worthwhile reserve infielder. So which teams need pitching the most?

You do know that the term "worthwhile reserve infielder" is largely contradictory, right?

Jaque Jones for Todd Walker anyone?

Nope. Novoa for Walker sounds like a better idea. The Padres would love to move Walker's contract. I wouldn't send them anything remotely useful.

Novoa is useful. He's tall, he can reach stuff on the top shelf without even needing a ladder. Also, those lightbulbs in the clubhouse don't change themselves.

I don't think they'll keep Barmes. I'd be interested in him, but I wouldn't trade Jones for him. The Rockies probably wouldn't have much use for him anyway with Holliday and Hawpe on the corners with Baker in waiting.

Why trade anything for Walker, just wait until the Padres cut him.

I doubt they cut him in the spring out of fear of losing a grievance.

I thought the whole idea behind cutting Walker, if they do, is to do it before the end of ST. That way the team would only owe him around $650k. He will be an expensive bench player.

If San Diego is going to risk a grievance and cut him, they actually have to do it by the end of tomorrow-we'll know soon if he's on the market again. Their GM said if he was one of the best 25 players they'd keep him-unfortunately, he's made that decision a lot harder (if he is one of their 25 best) by putting up a .227/.261/.273 line so far in ST.

Walker won't be going anywhere unless someone will trade for him and take his salary with him. The Padres aren't in bad shape financially, even if they like to cry about it.

Kouzmanoff is no guarantee to hit righties at 3b. Giles hasn't had much work so far this spring at 2b. They pretty much need Walker right now.

They aren't in a pinch financially after shedding Nevin, Klesko and Park not all that long ago. I'd guess they are right around 50-55m, which is 10m less than they were spending when they were in the old ball park.
