Good trade by the Eagles today - dealt away Darwin Walker and a conditional late-round pick to the Bills for Takeo Spikes and Kelly Holcomb. The Eagles already were two deep at each of the DT positions, so Walker was extraneous. But, we were thin at LB, and while Spikes isn't the player he used to be, he's still productive when healthy. Holcomb is a decent backup quarterback, so now the Eagles have Holcomb and Feeley to back up McNabb, which is fine.

Yeah, I was thinking the Eagles got a real steal there.

The New York Jets announced Monday they have signed defensive end Andre Wadsworth. The announcement was made by Jets General Manager Mike Tannenbaum.

Wha?

Man I remember playing Madden '98 or '99 and always grabbing that guy if I did the fantasy draft... I thought he was out of the league like 5 years ago.

Darwin Walker is a bad ass. I remember a play where he bull rushed the opposing guard directly into the QB's face before he finished his 5 steps. It was the sled drill done with a real human instead. I like his game because of that.

In my local paper today, the sports section had a list of compensatory draft picks for this year's NFL draft. Did I miss something? Since when does the NFL have MLB-esque compensatory picks for lost free agents?

The NFL started awarding compensatory picks in 1993.

Dan Shanoff's blog has a funny entry today. Peyton Manning hosted SNL this past weekend, and apparently there was a bit during his monologue during the dress rehearsal that was dropped in the live broadcast:

Anyway, during Peyton's monologue, Amy Poeler was dressed in a Patriots jersey and heckled Peyton, saying "What does Tom Brady and the Circus have in common? They both have two more rings than you."

Peyton stared right back and said, "That's not the ONLY thing he'll have two more of....."

HAHAHAHAHA!!! Good stuff. They should have kept that in there.

They are typically 2nd day picks, but occasionally are 3rd round picks as well.

No, they start in round 3. You hear about them before the draft, but you don't usually hear them talk about a particular pick being a compensatory selection during the draft. It can really help a teams draft though-like this year, the Colts have an extra 3rd, 4th, and 5th round picks-they knew they were going to get good compensatory selections, which allowed them to trade their 2nd round pick for Booger Mcfarland who helped them win the title.

Non-player offseason news:

Trib"]Defense might win championships, but offense again won the vote Tuesday when NFL owners turned down a recommendation to allow one defensive player per team to wear a helmet headset to communicate with coaches between plays the way quarterbacks do.

With a three-fourths majority necessary, this year's vote was 22-10, closer than last year's 18-14 but still not enough to give the defense the same advantage as the offense.

.......

Instant replay, which used to be subject to owner approval on a year-to-year basis, finally was installed permanently by a 30-2 vote.

.......

The league's latest agreement to share revenue will redistribute $430 million through 2009 from high-revenue to low-revenue clubs that are hurt by last year's collective bargaining agreement that awarded 60 percent of gross revenue to players.

"It's not a system that everybody is thrilled with, but that's a necessary part of compromising," Bears' chairman Michael McCaskey said. "You have to have every one of the 32 teams able to compete and this should be a big step in that direction."

........

Assistant coaches on Super Bowl-bound teams now will be allowed to have second interviews for head coaching positions during two-week breaks before Super Bowls. Before, they were limited to only one interview before divisional playoff games.

Mike Minter has restructured his contract and announced this is his last season. I'm going to miss him - solid player, hard worker, all class. He's been a Panther since I can remember.

Since '97...his entire career. Originally drafted by them in the bottom of the 2nd round.

For those who haven't already seen, Dwayne Jarrett ran a 4.67 and a 4.62 40-yard dash at his pro day today. Sidney Rice had 25 teams show up to his pro day, and his agent advised him not to run even though conditions were described as ideal. It looks like 2 of the top receivers in the draft will be falling come draft day.

From cnnsi:

One NFL team owner I know told me that he has it on good authority that Adam "Pacman'' Jones only leaves his house these day accompanied by an off-duty police officer whom he employs as a bodyguard. "He fears for his life at this point,'' the owner said. "He won't even leave his house without that protection. And it wasn't a club-imposed idea. He feels he has become a target for trouble of sorts.''

Let's see: Jones does his little rain thing, punches a stripper in the face, gets yelled at by a bouncer, and then shots ring out. But he is a target? The funny thing is that the mayor of Las Vegas said that after the NBA All-Star game he felt the city's image was tarnished becuase of this and other occurrences. Wow!

Terrible. The sad thing is, I fully expect the Titans to now trade up to get him after this awful offseason.

Pacman has been whining about being a target most of the time he's been here. He's never taken responsibility for his actions, instead simply saying that everybody's out to get poor little ol' him.

I don't actually know if Pacman is that bad of a guy, but he has a terrible knack of picking the worst people to hang out with. Most of the trouble he gets into is from hanging out with people doing bad things and he's just there.

The thing he doesn't understand, it seems, is that doesn't exonerate him from blame. He needs to take responsibilty for the people he chooses to spend time with and seek out better friends. Take LenDale White for instance, I was very worried about some issues I had seen from him before we drafted him. But I feel much better now because he's become very good friends with Vince, who is a great person from all I can tell.

ChicagoBears.com"]PHOENIX - Players have another reason to avoid drawing too much extra attention to themselves during a game.

Spiking the ball or launching it into the air after a play between the goal lines will result in a five-yard penalty.

That proved to be the most significant change in playing rules voted by owners as the NFL's annual meeting came to a close.

..................

-- Elimination of a player scoring a touchdown even if only his body, and not the ball, goes over the pylon at the goal line in the front corner of the end zone. Now, some part of the ball must cross the pylon, which no longer carries the vague definition in the rules of theoretically extending "around the world."

-- Modification of the roughing-the-passer penalty so that a defender engaged with a quarterback who extends his arms and shoves the passer to the ground does not draw a penalty. Despite common perception, roughing-the-passer penalties have been on a steady decline. There were 135 in 2004, 127 in '05, and 106 last season.

-- A pass that unintentionally hits an offensive lineman is no longer a penalty.

Hear that, Urlacher? Flexing is no longer a penalty!

Cowboys G Marco Rivera, 34, is expected to announce his retirement after a second back surgery in January.

Rivera spoke earlier in the offseason about making a comeback, but that apparently won't happen. Packers GM Ted Thompson was vilified two years ago for not paying huge bucks to retain Rivera, but he turned into a major mistake by the Cowboys. Mar. 29 - 10:28 am et

He hurt his back before he ever got to us and was never the same player. I'm almost glad to see him go, he got pushed into the backfield on almost every play.

Count me as one who did not like what Thompson did by letting Rivera and Wahle go. But it looks like he was more than right about Rivera, especially with Colledge's production last season.

I wasn't able to watch last season, but from what I understand he was pretty much a black hole at RG with the C and RT having to help him on almost every play. Having big Leonard Davis at RG this year will be a huge upgrade.
