During the meeting, Selig also spoke about the free-agent market and singled out the Chicago Cubs and San Francisco Giants, among others, for their spending, one official at the meeting said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the remarks during the session were not intended to be made public. Selig also mentioned the Toronto Blue Jays, the official said.

Selig wouldn't specify what he said to owners about the game's economics.

"We discussed some things, but we do that at every meeting," Selig said.

I found this rather interesting...

Oh come on. It's not like the money isn't there for ownership to spend.

The Cubs may have overpaid for their talent, but judging the past few years, they've needed to.

He didn't cry boo when Detroit overpaid for Magglio, Pudge, or Troy Percival. It's the nature of the beast. In times of flush cash, owners will pay it out. And if they can't get players at market price, they'll have to overpay for talent.

If he wanted to rag on anyone it should be teams like the D-Rays, Marlins and Royals who have consistently cut payroll while readily accepting the MLB's dole.

I say if the fans are willing to forgive the Cubs for finally spending all the money we've given them on Lilly, Marquis and one of the game's all-time overrated players in Soriano, Selig should probably let it slide too.

Bud has a small market complex.

Exactly. Selig has done a lot of good as an executive for MLB. However, he also bilked the city of Milwakee out of a lot of money on the new park and managed to run a once good franchies into the ground. He's a business man who focuses on the bottom line. He and Jeff Loria have a lot in common.

Isn't telling teams not to spend so much money borderline collusion?

And the reason they are spending this year and not some years past. Is the MLB contract signed yet because with this and the leaked drug tests they might have a problem getting it passed.

Jayson Starke had that rumor a while back about the Commissioner's Office coming down hard on Houston over their reported contract offers to Pettitte. He claimed that was one reason why Houston lost him to the Yankees.

It's not really good for baseball. How are all the other teams supposed to be able to afford mediocre players that won't have much of an impact on their team?

Selig probably told the Cubs that they could have had Soriano for 10 million a year if they would have signed him LAST offseason.

Ummmmm... wasn't Soriano under arbitration last offseason? Is Selig really that much of an imbecil? Or am I the imbecil for missing out on the memo?
