Why no mention of the Yankees and their 200m payroll?

Because Jesus loves each and every one of them!

But I've got a tee shirt that says Jesus Hate the Yankees ... a Wrigley Field usher yelled at me when I wore it at a Cubs-Giants game.

Selig probably told the Cubs that they could have had Soriano for 10 million a year if they would have signed him LAST offseason.

Ummmmm... wasn't Soriano under arbitration last offseason? Is Selig really that much of an imbecil? Or am I the imbecil for missing out on the memo?

Yeah, he did go through arbitration last year. If I remember correctly, wasn't he traded and the Nats were trying to dump him or something? I know he strongly resisted the move to the OF, and no one was biting. Right?

Because that's our Buddy!

Something is up with this because he can't be that ignorant to really say this without having some reason.

Selig's a hypocritical chicken. No problem singling out the Cubs, but WHOA WAIT A MINUTE THERE BUDDY! Don't dare mention the Yankees or the Red Sox!! That would be wrong!

Give me a freaking break.

I'd love to hear Bud complaining about all the MLB merchandising revenues should the Cubs actually win a World Series.

Not to mention the tv ratings for the entire postseason. We got a glimpse of the potential in 2003. A World Series appearance would be insane. Should they play the Red Sox or Yankees in it, god know how much money they will be bringing in.

money that will be split off to the other teams and then not spent on payroll. You know, sorta like luxury tax money

If Bud has a problem with the teams spending money like crazy, then there's one thing to tell him.

Implement a salary cap and revenue sharing.

It doesn't take a genius to figure it out.

MLB already has revenue sharing.

Everybody knows that Bud Selg is an alias of Homer Simpson. So pay no mind to baseball's "commissoner", cause he too much thinking about doughnuts to do to actually worry about the state of the game.

Another mention of this from Newsday.

Ken Davidoff / Newsday.com[/url]"] The Cubs' aggressiveness reflected the baseball industry's robust health, but such spending angered commissioner Bud Selig, who reportedly scolded team owners at their January quarterly meetings. Yet you won't find any regrets here. Said Hendry: "If we don't go out and attempt to get better after last year, the criticism would certainly be 10 times worse than being criticized for spending the money we spent. You can't have it both ways."

...

"We went on a 60-to-75-game scouting expedition that was really channeled to all of the free agents we might consider," Hendry said. "We tried to really attack our own needs ... Someone saw Soriano in about 45 of his last 60 games.

"There was no sense in hanging your head. It was better to get ready to fix it."

I think it's ridiculous to single out anyone. If they really want to single someone out, it should be Steinbrenner and whoever happens to be GMing the Boston Red Sox (Epstein). They are the one's who were most guilty of raising the bar. The other teams do what they have to do to compete.

If the Cubs didn't pay Soriano, someone else would have. Same for Zito. And those contracts really aren't as bad as Gary Matthews Jr., Gil Meche and Juan Pierre, to name just a few bad deals this offseason.

The Cubs haven't won a World Series in nearly 100 years. For years, they've been the team that cheated the fans of opportunities to build a good team by spending money. Chicago is a big market city.

Not only have the Yankees spent ridiculously, Selig has approved trade after trade where the Yankees eat most of the salary. The Yankees do not deserve a pass.

But, honestly, do any of us really care what Bud Selig has to say anyway? He's a horrible commissioner who has served his position way too long.

Give the teams who have to pay luxury taxes the hard time. Afterall, they are the one's who spend more than any other team. And in the Yankees case, nearly twice as much as any two other teams combined.

I'm sure it had more to do with Zito/Soriano than singling out two organizations. I don't care what anyone says, Selig had the right to blast Hendry and Sabean.

Why? He has never said a word to the Yankees or Boston when they sign people to ridiculous ass contracts. So explain why its ok for him to single out Hendry and Sabean?

It's not the most rational take on the situation, is it?

No he didn't. There's no salary cap in baseball, and there is a luxury tax for high spenders, so it isn't any of $elig's business how much teams spend and on who.

I think it would be more fitting to blame the teams who created this market and environment of spending rather than those who are just trying to survive in it.

Neither Sabean nor Hendry were bidding against themselves and just artificially increasing value, so it should be acceptable for them to pay, but still troubling for baseball as a whole.

Selig hasn't been willing to take a hard line on a lot of issues during his tenure so I find it odd that he singled out the Cubs specifically. BTW, doesn't the Commissioner's office have to approve all contracts before they are finalized? If he really had a problem with any aspect of the deals (years, dollar amount, or both) be could have vetoed.

I think the Cubs' angle has something to do with his roots in Milwaukee. As someone else already mentioned, why hasn't he openly denounced the spending of the Yankees (and Red Sox) over the years?
