On the bright side, now Bonds has something else in common with Willie Mays and Hank Aaron!

:-k

Amphetamine use was rampant in baseball throughout the '50s and '60s. Their use probably didn't drop off all that much until last year's announcement of testing and punishments, but players were much less open about using them after they became less socially acceptable (not to mention illegal) in the late '60s/early '70s.

Mays had his own amphetamine-based concoction he dubbed "red juice." I'm not aware of any evidence (anecdotal or otherwise) linking Aaron to amphetamines, but considering the era in which he played it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if he popped a greenie now and again.

I'm sure there was a time in the 60's and even 70's that a player might have took some and not even really known it. I'd imagine just about any MLB pot of coffee was "leaded". A lot of the more naive players probably just thought it was some damn good coffee, lol.

So, another leak of information that was supposed to be private? The first positive test is not supposed to result in a player being named.

And blaming someone else? There seems to be a pattern there.

Ya know, he woulda been smarter and saved face by paying a doctor $40k to lie for him, saying he was prescribing Adderall (dextroamphetamene) to treat Bonds' narcolepsy (which could explain his defense in LF) as well as determining if the off-label use could help his depression.

why wasn't he suspended?

You get a free pass with the first test failure in MLB.

for all drugs or just greenies?

All as far as I know. At least that is what they said on Mike & Mike.

According to SI.com:

While amphetamines are considered performance-enhancing drugs, they are treated differently than steroids under baseball's drug policy. Had Bonds failed a steroid test, he would have been suspended for 50 games, but under baseball's amphetamine policy no one is publicly identified or suspended until a second positive, which would result in a 25-game suspension. A player is suspended for 80 games for a third positive.

What a first rate scumbag.

for the amphetamine use or the subsequent excuse?

I think Bonds is a well rounded scumbag.

Agreed, but testing positive for greenies has nothing to do with it. It just gives him something in common with nearly every other baseball player, ever.

And he probably had some old school training. I'm curious how many other MLB'ers tested positive for amphetaminess?
