I just saw on ESPN while watching M & M that Estes just signed a minor league deal with the Padres. No matter what you think of the guy he did step up and pitch a great game to help the Cubs get into the playoffs. All the other missle launching games didn't help I know but that one game was nice. He could actually have decent success in Petco. The rest of the NL West parks, good luck, although he did do okay, not good, with Colorado a couple years back (as surprising as that was)

He was with San Diego last year, but he was out most of the year with an injury. Yeah, he'll put up decent numbers at Petco.

To this day, I still can't wrap my mind around this game. I mean a 4 hit CG shutout with the playoffs on the line. He even had 2 hits and a run scored that game. Sure it was against the crappy Reds, but still unbelievable.

Estes is proof positive that I should have been a pitcher instead of a first baseman. So long as you are a lefty, you can practically suck at pitching and still make it to the bigs.

Yeah exactly, as baseball games that was an outlier even though the Reds were decimated by injuries at that point (Dunn, Griffey, Kearns were all out IIRC). But even still, Estes had a WHIP of 1.97 is his previous 11 starts before that game. He was simply awful in a Cub uniform.

I saw that game in stunned amazement. I always felt bad for Shawn b/c he seemed like a good guy. He got a very nice reception at the end of that game ... you got the sense he knew it was his last in a Cub uniform.

You would have to be good at one point to get to the bigs. That's the difference. I don't think anyone can say Estes was never good. A 19-5 record with a 3.18 ERA (ERA+ of 130) in 1997 is pretty good in over 200 IP.

I was at that game. Drove down to Cincy just for the game, drove back home the same night.

Wrote a paper and set up a presentation for another class on the way back.

I was on a fishing trip in Minnesota. I had been running my mouth that there was no point in watching the game that night, lets go out and fish for Pike, 'cause Estes was going to lose. I quoted stats about how bad he'd been.

Everyone was tired and wanted to play cards with the TV on in the background. At the time I was writing for cubstalk.com. The guys ridiculed me endlessly about my misjudging an obviously talented pitcher.

Did you play baseball, OMC?

I was at that game too. I remember getting into some good-natured ribbing with one of the park attendents that night as he was saying the Cubs would find a way to blow it and of course I couldn't believe it at the time and gave it right back to him. I believe we went to Pittsburgh right after that and saw 2 games of that series too. After that Estes game I though it was really meant to be.

Wow, that seems like 10 years ago.

this is why I beat my son when he throws a ball with his right hand.

Okay, so I don't beat him, but since he shows 10 times more ability with the left hand, I encourage the use of the left hand / arm.

A father has to look out for his retirement this day and age ;)
