New Jersey Star Ledger[/url]"] The Mets were close to reaching an agreement last night with David Newhan, according to a National League official who did not want to be named because the deal has not been announced. The utility player, who can play either the outfield or the infield, spent the past three seasons with the Baltimore Orioles who did not tender him a contract.

Newhan, 33, was apparently ready to pass up an offer from the Chicago Cubs to sign with the NL East champs. The Mets bolstered their bench with the additions of infielder Damion Easley and Ben Johnson earlier in the off-season.

Big sigh of relief.

Those sons of bitches!

Drat - and we were just one more medicore middle infielder away from winning it all

Don't be surprised if the Cubs open next year with Jacque Jones in center awaiting the arrival of Felix Pie. David Newhan turned down an offer from the Cubs to accept a deal with the Mets because he thought he could get squeezed out of a job. …

Exactly what job was this? Please don't tell me he was going to start...

I don't think it was a starting job. I think Newhan might have thought this:

here would be the opening day outfielders with Newhan on the team: Starters: Murton, Jones, Soriano-Bench: Pagan, Newhan

When Pie comes up, one of those outfielders would have to be cut-and Newhan was worried it would be him, so he went to the more guaranteed job.

Always the bridesmaid...

The club hopes Newhan, 33, adds another left-handed bat and provides additional versatility.

"David is a versatile player who can help us in so many spots on the field," Mets general manager Omar Minaya said. "We couldn't be more pleased to have him in our organization."

Damnit Jimbo, you're slipping. Now who are the Cubs going to get to fill the versatility gap? (And no, DeRosa doesn't count since he'll be starting.)

Buried in the column:

The Red Sox still haven't announced the J.D. Drew deal, leaving him officially a free agent. This is about to become a big story.

If Drew doesn't get signed by the Red Sox I seriously hope the Cubs make a play for him. They can trade JJ to the Red Sox.

If they get Drew I will be very optimistic about 2007.

Drew completely changes the dynamics of this team. He hits lefthanded, can play CF and will put up at least .850 OPS in the middle of the order.

He would easily make the Cubs offense the best in the NL, at least on paper.

Next year they could trade Murton to make room for Pie, if he's ready, and slide Soriano to LF.

All of this is contingent on him being healthy, and it would not concern you in the slightest that Boston would have backed out on signing him after his physical?

Sorry, I meant why is Boston delaying this?

Hes most likely not healthy and there worried about giving him such a big contract. Plus im pretty sure the fans werent too thrilled about the signing either.

It seems Drew is rarely healthy, though he did play 146 games last year.

I would be worried about paying him a ton of money only to watch his games hover around the 110 mark.

Posted

Boston apparently has concerns about Drew's shoulder holding up over the life of the contract and they want to insert language to protect themselves if that shoulder proves to be a problem. Boras has said the shoulder is fine and there is no need for such language.

i'm not sure how this will be resolved. At first it seemed no big deal, but it's now appearing it could be a bigger deal that first believed.

They are trying to put in a Magglio clause...if he misses X amount of games because of his shoulder then they can opt out of the contract at the end of the first or second year or whatever.

I believe at first it was thought of just posturing for less money, but if Theo holds the line I can see a team like the Angels swooping in and picking him up since they missed out on all of their targets (and Rivera broke his leg). Heck, I could see him signing with the Angels for more than he agreed to with Boston. Although he probably walks WAY too much to be an Angel.

If the cubs really wanted to win they would swoop in, sign Drew away, and involve themselves in a three way deal sending Pie et al to Florida, Willis to NYY, netting ARod. We'd probably be flirting with lux tax, but would have an offense that would make up for even worst case scenario with our pitching.

Maybe the Cubs could get Drew on a one year 18 million deal and he hits free agency again next season.

That was what my dad and I were talking about earlier -- offer him a 1 year/15 mil or more deal, and ship Jones+others out of town for maybe a SS?

I'm sorry, any time anyone mentions trading Murton away I have to say this.

WHY!?

Soriano, Pie, and who? Drew? How many people can we honestly pay more than $15 mil to (and adding an injury risk to boot)? You know you've GOT to work in a couple of healthily producing youngesters in there SOMEWHERE. Why would you not rather have an outfeild of Murton, Pie, and Soriano? That way you've got 2 guys who are making under $2 mil. Murton will always be a good OBP guy, and he'll start to hit more HR as he gets a bit older. Why would anyone want to trade a guy like Murton, who'se a good player already, and is only going to get better. Could you please explain why you'd want to create a hole in LF, just for no reason?

But the reason he and Boras are balking at Boston's (possible) out-clause is probably becuase they don't like his chances to play well enough this season that he would be an attractive 2008 FA.

I don't think that is the case. If he was hurt this year he didn't show it.

To Giles Bros.,

I don't want to trade Murton. I love Ginger Kids. However, the Cubs don't, or at least they don't seem too. They've talked repeatedly about a platoon for Murton this year. This will be his third season in the bigs and if they are talking platoon they obviously don't value him very highly.

The Cubs have never talked about a platoon for Murton. With the Cubs statements about wanting to get a left-handed bat, many people have assumed they want a platoon for Murton, but the Cubs have never come out and said it-they could want another left-handed bat for center field, for example. All the Cubs have said about Murton is that he will get plenty of playing time.

Not according to Bruce Miles.

Can you point me to where he said it? I didn't think he said that, but I certainly could be wrong (and probably am, if you remember him saying it)-do you know if it was in the paper, or what thread it was in?
