If David Newhan had to nail down two teams that were his likely employer for 2007, it would be the Cubs and Mets.

Not a bad pair to choose from.

"I'd say those two are the best bets," he told me earlier today in a phone conversation.

Both teams have made the strongest offers to Newhan, who wasn't tendered a contract by the Orioles. And he sees both of them as good fits, especially because he could return to the National League.

Ugh! Career .315 OBP, with barely .700 OPS for his career. Has some speed, but is 33 years old. Even with speed, he can't play CF, where the Cubs could actually use some help. So, that makes him a corner OF, with no arm or power, and yes....he k's more than he should for a slap hitter. I guess the good thing is he could play 3B or 2B in a pinch, though he hasn't played the former in a year, and the latter for about 6.

I'd rather give Pagan the last spot on the team than this guy.

what an unappealing ball player. wasn't his name involved with a Jacque Jones to O's offer/rumor/the like (as in what O's preferred to send back if we were looking to purge him for 'anything')? plenty of guys already in the system that would seem to be better uses of roster space.

The whole time I was reading the original post I was wondering who David Newhan is.

I still don't know.

I thought it was some sort of front office guy when I saw his name...

Are the Cubs considering him for a minor league coaching job? Or a broadcaster? Cause it can't be as a baseball player, because I would prefer The Gremlin---you know who I am talking about---to David Newhan. I hope this is one "derby" the Cubs should lose.

When I first read it, I thought it was some sports annalysist saying "Best bet to win it all, the Cubs or Mets". . :P

I actually did. I have no idea who Newhan is but I assume he sucks.

Same thought ran through my head.

Anyway, I've seen Newham and obviously the fact that I forgot him says alot about him. Statistically he's horrible, and his best tool might be his speed. Horray speed.

How many spots are left on the bench, not counting the maybes from AAA? It doesn't seem worth it to pay more than league minimum for a guy who is going to be the 25th man anyway.

I believe he's the guy that Corey Patterson beat out of a job. We all wanted Corey gone (well, most of us), and now the Cubs are considering someone who is worse than Corey.

Just shoot us all and quit dragging out this suffering.

Unless his name is Tejada or Markakis, let's not talk to Baltimore or any of their rejects, please.

When I first read the subject header of the post, I thought it was in reference to what teams had the best shot at signing Cliff Floyd. Like the rest of the posts, I have no idea who this guy is. I'd like to see the Cubs sign Floyd or Aubrey Huff instead.

I'm surprised at the amount of people who are saying they don't know who he is. Not that he's a star or anything near that, but you don't see people stating that they don't know something too often on here.

I know who he is, and he sucks. I hope the Cubs don't have any interest in him.

I liked him in MVP Baseball. He was pretty solid.

In Newhan's defense, he worked out well for my fantasy baseball team for a few weeks. That was over three years ago.

I know you're joking, but I find it funny because I find that that kind of mentality is never a good thing. I used to follow players I liked in that game and found out they sucked. When my brother found out we got Izturis, while most people here made a collective groan, and I told him that he's not really that good, he replied with "What are you talking about he's awesome, every time I start a season in MVP I pick him up first!"

It's that kind of mentality that led me to believe that David Delucci was a speedster. Sometimes I hate video game developers for not know anything... then again I fell for it, so...

On the topic of this rumor? Blech, blah, bloo, double damn. Please don't come here David Newhan

I'd add Bedard to that list and then agree with you.
