Jocketty's search intensified as Jason Marquis became the first member of the 2006 rotation to land elsewhere. Marquis, banished from the rotation during the Division Series and excluded from the roster during the NLCS and World Series, accepted a three-year, $28 million bid from the Chicago Cubs. Marquis earned $5.15 million while going 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA.

GOOD LUCK WITH THAT CRAP

You Cardinals and your communist propaganda! That's not even a real newspaper.

I see it's already posted.....this is just scary, and I'd rather wait until there's actually a full article before I believe it.

But...wow. Hopefully Rothchild really did find his pitching flaw (physical, not mental - we all know nobody can fix that ) Even so, that money is ridiculous.

there's no way this is true. There's no way a pitcher gets a raise after a year in which he posts a 6.02 ERA and a guy generally considered to be one of the best pitching coaches around gives up on him. That just can't happen...

For what its worth, 2 of the most highly thought of pitching coaches already gave up on him because of the mental issues.

He has talent. Look at his game logs and the bi-polar stretches. 4 great starts, 6 terrible ones, etc. It's there, he just can't do it consistently.

If you believe control is an inherent talent and much like plate discipline can't be taught effectively, like I do then you probably aren't a fan of this deal. If you do believe it can be taught then you have reason to be optimistic.

Either way I'm glad to finally be rid of the bane of my existence. Now all I have to do is wait out Aaron Miles.

Yeah, I looked at his gamelog earlier today. IIRC, he had an 8 IP, 1 ER start followed by the disaster against the White Sox.

I want to see this from a more reliable source before anyone goes jumping off bridges...

His groundout/flyout ratio was 2.05 in '04 (3.71 ERA)...it was 1.70 in '05 (4.13 ERA) and it was 1.12 this year (6+ERA)

If we get the '04/'05 version of Marquis, he's not bad. He'd actually be another good #3 like Lilly.

I wouldn't mind him on a 1 year type deal with an option for a 2nd...but 3 and whatever upper 20's number is being thrown out there is nuts.

Bottom line...'04 Marquis=good...'05 Marquis=pretty decent...'06 Marquis=ummmm yeaaa

I like it, if it is one yr with a vesting option. I know Mazzone and Duncan are two of the better pitching coaches in baseball, but BOTH are known to have some misses with their hits. So, I think the talent is there for Marquis, but can Rothschild fix what Mazzone (who is OVERRATED, btw) and Duncan couldn't? Who knows.

So another report of this three year 28M crap contract? Overall, I think Hendry's had a solid offseason... however, if he signs crap-ass Jason Marquis to that kind of deal, I'll jump all over the fire Hendry bandwagon, for the first time.

That said, I'd be shocked if it happens. I see the Cubs signing Marquis for a one year deal for about 3-5M, with a second year team option. I'm completely opposed to signing another starter, but if we're going to sign one then I hope it's Marquis... for a low base.

holy wow. I give up on this team if they give that much guaranteed to a guy who put up a 6+ era.

I agree that the contract being talked about is awful...but is everyone that willing to overlook the 2 good years prior to last year that Marquis put up??

I know this may sound crazy...but Marquis has a 4.55 career ERA. Lilly's is 4.60. We gave Lilly 4/40...

15-7, 3.71, 201.1 IP

13-14, 4.13, 207 IP

14-16, 6.02, 194.1 IP

12-10, 4.06, 197.1 IP

10-11, 5.56, 126.1 IP

15-13, 4.31, 181.2 IP

Other than the timing of their down years, which pitcher would you rather have??

Like someone else said, I'll believe it when a credible national source picks it up. There's nothing on the Tribune website, on Chicago radio, on ESPN/Rotoworld/CBSsportsline....not anywhere.

Just in a looney forum, and in Bernies pressbox...posted by a guy who later modified "done deal" to "should be finalized today" or some such nonesense. The only legitimate reference by a media member is in a bottom-line afterthought of a daily column. Either someone screwed up and reported the rumor as a done deal (likely), or Joe Strauss scooped the world on this news by a very large chunk of time (seems rather unlikely).

I don't know if its already been posted but ESPN.com's rumor page has the following on Marquis...

Dec 8 - After losing out on the Gil Meche sweepstakes, the Cubs have turned their attention to Jason Marquis, the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Marquis worked out last month for Cubs pitching coach Larry Rothschild and likely will seek an annual salary of at least $10 million.

The right-hander went 14-16 with a 6.02 ERA with the Cardinals in 2006. He allowed a league-leading 35 home runs and has only one winning full season (15-7 in 2004) on his resume.

Wow. How does Marquis get the idea that its okay for him to dare to seek at least $10 million annually? What is going on?

FWIW, the rumor page also had this listed about Suppan and the Cubs.

Dec 8 - Although the Cubs have stepped up their interest in Jeff Suppan, his heart still seems to be in St. Louis, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

I don't buy the STLTODAY.com report that the Cubs are EVEN considering a 3 yr $28 mill deal. That "report" seems so Phil Rogers, is not even funny. Bruce Miles in the Dailyherald is saying the Cubs are considering a 1 yr deal with "vesting options." So, I don't know stltoday.com is getting 3 yrs $28 mill, but I doubt that's true.

Hold on a sec...

I know this is terrible news for you guys, but the St. Louis Post-Dispatch is not a credible source? This is from an article by the Cardinals beat writer in a top 15 circulation newspaper in the country.

A few reasons why I think this is legit:

1) the Dispatch submits it's online articles at midnight, so this is before most sources would pick it up on the wire. They are more concerned with making deadline at that point.

2) The Post-Dispatch is a major national newspaper and Strauss rarely jumps the gun.

It's possible that this is all a cruel joke and he jumped the gun, but I'm sorry; I doubt it.
