unless they've got someone else on their radar, they might as well give them marshall AND marmol. if you get church, pretty much every position + every spot in the rotation is taken care of for the next three years...what's the point of holding on to those guys?

I agree. To be honest, I'd give up as much as Marmol, Marshall, and Eyre just because I doubt Hendry would get anything useful out of those guys anyway.

Just out of curiosity, if this guy is such a great talent then why is he 28 years old with only 527 major league AB's?

Frank Robinson went to the same school as Dusty.

It's yet to be determined whether he'll be a great talent. But, even if he's just a good talent, Church patrolling CF when we don't have a current in house option to play CF is way, way better than how well Marmol does in AAA this year.

Because they are commodities with value that should not just be given away.

The older they get, the less value they have.

If Lofton signs elsewhere (rumored to be headed to Texas), I think that makes Ryan Church a more likely acquisition for the Cubs.

And raises the asking price.

Which was already supposively to high.

Could this mean Texas plans to non-tender Wilkerson? He'd cost nothing in prospects and could potentially return to form and be very productive in CF.

We should get Church and Wilkerson and let them battle it out.

I don't think Church is enough of an upgrade to be worth the price in prospects. Unless the Cubs are going for Vernon Wells, I'd stand pat in the outfield. I wouldn't sign Floyd either.

As others have stated, Jones=Wells against RH pitching. I'd like to see Lou move Theriot around SS/2B/CF. He could pick up 150 or more ABs in a CF platoon role. Bring Pie up when he's ready and either deal Jones then or platoon Pie in LF with Murton.

Concentrate on upgrading SS. That's the real offensive black hole.

what else are you going to trade them for?

the cubs have 1b, 2b, 3b, lf, rf, cf (pie), four spots in the rotation (prior, hill, lilly, marquis) and a bunch of pen guys (dempster, howry, eyre, etc) signed for next season. some of those spots are taken care of for the next 3-5 years.

I come bearing bad news...

Nationals manager Manny Acta placed a call to outfielder Ryan Church on Friday, with Acta giving Church nothing but positive reinforcement.

Church, according to Acta, was happy to hear from his new boss and feels he can have a fresh start with the Nationals in 2007.

"I've always gotten along with Church when I was in Montreal," Acta said. "It's going to be up to him. This is a make or break year for him to show the world what he can do or go in the other direction by becoming a fourth [outfielder]."

Last season, Church spent most of the time in the Minor Leagues, but he finished the season strong in the big leagues, going 40-for-131 (.305) with six home runs and 24 RBIs in his last 50 games.

It has been reported that Church is on the trading block, but Acta told him not to worry about that kind of talk and that he would give him a chance to battle for a starting job on the team.

"Obviously, he is a hot commodity and some teams have been asking about him," Acta said. "I didn't want him to worry about that. I was reassuring him that I was happy to be reunited with him and the at-bats are going to be there."

Church was not available for comment.

Acta said Church was not bothered by all the trade rumors, but he was concerned about how he is being portrayed in the press regarding the Mexican Winter League. It was reported that Church declined to go to Mexico under the advice of his agent, Jeff Borris, who said Church had nothing more to prove and should be given the chance to start for the Nationals. Church did, however, work with visualization specialist Bill Harrison on tracking the baseball.

"He felt that the winter ball thing was blown out of proportion," the skipper said. "He said it didn't happen that way. He said [the team in Mexico] decided to go with another player. "

Not cool. Not cool at all.

Also in the article...

The team also is close to signing infielder/outfielder Jose Macias, who was a valuable player off the bench for the Expos in 2002 and '03. Macias played in Japan last season.

HA!

I come bearing not so bad news...

This from CBS Sportsline:

In earlier reports, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times that the Cubs have held discussions with the Nationals concerning center fielder Ryan Church. The Nats would reportedly be interested in left-hander Sean Marshall.

If we're talking Marshall for Church straight up, we'd better jump all over that. I'm sure other names have circulated, but it's worth it to me.

I don't see this as bad news at all. I just see this as the Nationals aren't getting what they want from other teams in terms of trade proposals, so they do something like this so teams don't think they're that worried about trading Church. I think we'll probably see something like this concerning Jones in the not-too-distant future if Hendry doesn't think he's getting enough back in proposals.

I'm sure Church can be had if the price is right but according to Hoops' source they are asking for a lot for Church right now. I'm sure they know what they've got in him. If it takes Marmol or Marshall to do it I'm all game.

Rotoworld:

Chris Snelling's imminent arrival in Washington will likely further increase the chances that Ryan Church is dealt this winter.

Snelling and Church are both left-handed hitters who fit best in left field, though they do have some experience in center. It's unlikely that the Nationals will need both, and Church appeared to be on the way out anyway. We're guessing the starting job will be Snelling's to lose in spring training. Michael Restovich could act as his platoon partner.

Hendry....phone....now.

I move to ban roll eyes.

Well. I don't mind them. I just don't understand why they're being used here.
