He didn't say the first half.

cams68 (chicago): What's more likely Mark Prior throwing 200 innings this year or Mark Prior not throwing 200 more innings in his career?

Will Carroll: MORE likely? The latter. I don't believe either is very likely as stated. I don't think Prior will get to 200 next year because he'll miss at least half. 200 over his career is more likely, but still not probably. I think Prior will be rebuilt and be good, not great. Thanks, Dusty.

All he implies is that Prior will miss some time next year... not necessarily the beginning of it.

Everything I heard from Tom House was that Prior will be ready to go and healthly (about a little over a month ago).

I wonder if he will still be able to throw as hard as before? My money is on him dropping 2 to 5 MPH's off his fastball.

All depends on the shoulder, physically there wasn't much potential of velocity growth given how perfect he was physically.

If he can get feel of his breaking pitch(es) again, he might end up being a similar version to the good Matt Morris (except diff. breaks on the curve).

He has long ways to go before we see anything like we did in '03. Ability to pitch a full season, 65-70 FB, 65-70 curve, and 70 command.

I'm just worried since he had a tie to House that steroids were involved and it wasn't just his shoulder. I really hope I'm wrong.

I'm predicting that he'll pitch at least 200 innings next year. Simulated game innings that is. I wonder what his record is in simulated games anyway? I also wonder how the velocity on his towel is looking. Anybody heard?

Boy, that joke never gets old, does it?

Mark Prior doesn't do the towel drill because he got hurt, he's done it since at least USC, if not longer, to keep his arm loose and to keep his form, if I'm not mistaken..

But funny, original joke anyways.

The towel drill is just a checkpoint to make sure everything is correct to be able to smack the glove from max stride plus 5 feet. It does nothing as far as improving mechanics or endurance, it just tells you that if you're not hitting the glove, something is wrong. If you miss to the left or right it is a balance issue and if you're short, you're rotating too soon.

Of course, you're always better off having someone there who knows what they're doing and can breakdown your delivery at each important stage.

I've never understood this odd fascination with the towel drill. Someone needs to get over excited about pitchers doing long toss, at least that improves arm strength.

if that's the case, then he has to be totally remade. 2-5 miles off his fastball, means many many many HRs.

What did we actually just read about him?

Seems to me that it wasn't much of anything at all.

Yea, if anything, I was a little more encouraged by this thread with UK's comment about House saying Prior would be ready to go.

Carrol's report just sounds more like him saying "Oh, of course he's going to be hurt and miss starts next year," than him knowing anything concrete.

Right. Will Carroll is the best in the business as far as baseball injuries go, but he wasn't giving any new info on Prior, just guessing at what his future holds.

Iunno, my post was supposed to show my sadness and stuff.

Anything that even brings up the memory of 2003, the things scouts said when he was drafted, and then whats with him today is enough to piss any Cubs fan off.

He had a +7 ERA last year and pitched under 45 innings. He will never be the same pitcher again. Washed up, done... finished!

Washed up, done, AND finished.....dang. Somebody should have warned Carpenter. When he was 26 he had a 6.26 ERA in 175 innings. In 02 it was 5.28 in 73 innings, and he didnt pitch at all in 03. He was was probably just washed up and done though.
