Washed up, done, AND finished.....dang. Somebody should have warned Carpenter. When he was 26 he had a 6.26 ERA in 175 innings. In 02 it was 5.28 in 73 innings, and he didnt pitch at all in 03. He was was probably just washed up and done though.

Well, I would love to be wrong and hope I am. However reality hits home when you read reports of his shoulder being loose and surgery could be an option. One if not his last start was in Milwaukee and he looked like a college pitcher! I hope things change, but I have a feeling he will never regain his 03 form.

I have to agree with MojoPin/davhern/cheapseats' assesment.

Will Carroll just mentioned matter of factly in a BP chat that Prior will miss the first half of next season. Has anyone heard anything else?

He didn't say the first half.

cams68 (chicago): What's more likely Mark Prior throwing 200 innings this year or Mark Prior not throwing 200 more innings in his career?

Will Carroll: MORE likely? The latter. I don't believe either is very likely as stated. I don't think Prior will get to 200 next year because he'll miss at least half. 200 over his career is more likely, but still not probably. I think Prior will be rebuilt and be good, not great. Thanks, Dusty.

All he implies is that Prior will miss some time next year... not necessarily the beginning of it.

Actually, Carroll responded to an e-mail in which he wrote that he would miss time based on what he hears about the shoulder now. This implies a first-half problem with no guarantees.

I would like to know how many degrees of separation there are between UK and Tom House. UK?

Everything I heard from Tom House was that Prior will be ready to go and healthly (about a little over a month ago).

I wonder if he will still be able to throw as hard as before? My money is on him dropping 2 to 5 MPH's off his fastball.

All depends on the shoulder, physically there wasn't much potential of velocity growth given how perfect he was physically.

If he can get feel of his breaking pitch(es) again, he might end up being a similar version to the good Matt Morris (except diff. breaks on the curve).

He has long ways to go before we see anything like we did in '03. Ability to pitch a full season, 65-70 FB, 65-70 curve, and 70 command.

I'm just worried since he had a tie to House that steroids were involved and it wasn't just his shoulder. I really hope I'm wrong.

Wow, really? That would really suck. I always just thought Prior was ultra-paranoid about his "golden arm" and babied it to the point where it eventually starting dipping down towards the mean.

nonono. You have to get loose. If you start loose, then when you try to loosen up you end up over-loosened or "uber-loose". I keep telling you people...getting too loose is how things fall off.

Kinda sorta.

The loose shoulder helped him generate a good deal of the velocity on his pitches, though it carried with it a risk of injury like this.

If they tighten it up, he should lose 2-3 mph off his fastball, but he shouldn't have to worry about the injury again for a good long while.

I'm predicting that he'll pitch at least 200 innings next year. Simulated game innings that is. I wonder what his record is in simulated games anyway? I also wonder how the velocity on his towel is looking. Anybody heard?

Boy, that joke never gets old, does it?

Hmm, turns out it actually does get old.

a golden oldie. It's retro now...and retro is in. get with the, times boys.

Apparently, because the whole QFT and "fixing" other peoples posts came and went a couple of years ago on the rest of the internet. Its all the rage here, though.

If you tighten up the arm you're increasing your chances of an arm injury. Arm speed is very important for a pitcher. Arm speed is more important than arm strength. The faster you can move your body, the more energy you have to generate a 90mph fastball.

I'm talking about the ball and socket joint of the shoulder and the network of tendons and ligaments holding it in place, not the tightness of the biceps, triceps, etc...

Pitching is not even a natural movement. You want your shoulder to be loose. Specially the rotator cuff. I don't see how a pitcher can throw a baseball at high speeds without a strong, stretched out rotator cuff.

Right.

Too tight and you can't get enough velocity at all.

Prior's is so loose that I understand he's been having microsubluxations if he throws hard enough. That's his problem.

Posted
Prior has abnormally loose shoulder joints, it allows him to put the type of strain that 95+ MPH will create. Of course when the joint is more loose than most, it increases the chance for arthritic changes.

Prior's problem starts off with his upper body mechanics. Elbow lifter is what I like to call him. Kerry Wood and John Smoltz are examples of elbow lifters, also. Now, there is no evidence out there that suggests lifting your elbow above your shoulder causes any kind of arm injury. However, im a bit suspicious of this arm movement. All three of these guys have experienced some kind of elbow/shoulder injury.

Hypothetical scenario.

Its July 31st 2007, Prior is 15-3 with a 3.21 ERA pitching a completly injury free season, do you sell high?

I pinch myself and wake up. :D

Really, there's not enough info there to make a choice. Who else is in the rotation at the time? How are they performing? How's team health? etc.

Not if Aramis is still on the team. I don't think a team has ever won the World Series with two guys who have such low Scrapiness Factors.

If we could get Joe Crede, though, now we're talking.
