Interesting....that number probably won't be enough for him. The Cubs are probably hoping that they can come in and swoop up Zito while everyone else is concentrating on pitching.

That said, I'd rather had Schmidt.

Zito will play center

I'm really surprised if that's true. I thought they'd have no interest.

I don't expect them to be very serious about Zito, and I think Zito will disappoint if he goes to a team with a hitter's park.

While I'm pretty sure, on this market, thats nowhere near enough to get Zito, isn't it cool that we're actually trying. Seriously, when is the last time we have seriously pursued three big name free agents ( and signed one )

It's good to know we're trying. If we can somehow land one of Schmidt/Zito I'd be a very happy man.

i fully expected hendry to vehemetly persue zito this offseason, as he seems to have been enamored with barry for a while. with that this contract offer, if true, is not going to be enough to sign him initially may be just a gateway to more serious talks between boras and the cubs(what with boras and hendrys seemingly great buisness relationship).

knowing hendrys past it would make sense that the cubs be more likely to end up with zito than schmidt.

If we sign Zito to 5 years he'd be as old as Schmidt is now when its up. I'd probably still rather have Schmidt but I'd be increadibly happy if we sign Zito.

Ive never been all that impressed with Zito, I think he would improve signifigantly in the NL though. Im content with the offer, though I dont think the money will be enough. I wont be sad if we dont get him though, Id rather have Schmidt.

there's no way this is true.

That's what I'm saying. This rumor is unverifiable, and there is no such newspaper as the San Diego Tribune. Its called the San Diego Union-Tribune.

I'd prefer Schmidt to Zito, but I'd prefer Zito to any of the other possibilities.

True that, but at what price? Is the difference between Zito and Lilly big enough to justify what their difference in salary might be?

If money is no option, I'd probably take Zito though...

And the San Diego Union-Tribune doesn't have anything about it on their web site.

Yep. Fishy...

The only way this is true is if the Schmidt negotiations aren't going well, IMO.

But, are the Cubs even in negotiations with Schmidt?
