According Jim Street, Schmidt will likely sign with either the Mariners or Dodgers.

Contrary to published reports, the Cubs have not made the right-hander an offer and it still appears that he will sign with either the Los Angeles Dodgers or Mariners. From all indications, Schmidt wants to continue his career on the West Coast.

The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported on Wednesday that the Mariners remain the front-runner to land Schmidt, who lives in Kelso, Wash., which is about a two-hour drive south of Safeco Field. He already has told the Yankees that he's not interested, and ignore the three-year, $45 million offer the Cubs supposedly put on the table.

The Mariners have at least two spots in their rotation to fill and appear to be getting a little antsy with not being able to fill either one.

Link.

So once again, we've established that some people are saying one thing and some people are saying another thing. At this point I don't believe any story I hear about Jason Schmidt.

I believe the stories that say the Cubs haven't offered him a contract are true.

Bob Nightengale was on Charley Steiner's XM radio show a couple of hours ago (noonish CT?). He said the pitching market was heating up and that he expected a slew of signings leading into and during the winter meetings. He expects Jason Schmidt to sign next week and said the Cubs were the favorites in his opinion. Seattle doesn't seem willing to match the dollar amounts being tossed around and, although the Dodgers seem interested, it's hard to gauge how interested they are.

Nightengale also said he thought Zito would sign later.

Oh man I hope you're right.

Zambrano?

Schmidt?

Hill?

Westbrook?

Miller (with prior on the background)?

Pitchingasm.

Honestly, if you get Schmidt, Westbrook, and a decent SS, you probably have a team that could compete with the mets for the best in the NL when healthy.

FWIW - I realize he probably got it from somewhere else - but they're reporting on SportsCenter that the Cubs offered 3/44.

STILL?

Steve Phillips was being talked to on SportsCenter about various baseball issues, one was "Report: Cubs offer Schmidt 3/$45"

The Met pitching staff doesn't look any better than the Cubs (right now).

If Schmidt is signed, the Cubs will be the favorites for the NL pennant.

Per metsblog.com:

Cardinals GM Walt Jockety has told the St. Louis Dispatch that he hopes to acquire two more starting pitchers. According to the report, in addition to exploring the trade market, Jockety will pursue free-agent RHP Jason Schmidt.

While appearing on WFAN this afternoon, ESPN’s Peter Gammons remarked that he expects the Mariners and Cubs to show the most interest in Schmidt, with the Cubs eventually winning out.

Yesterday, in the San Francisco Chronicle, Henry Schulman reported that the the Cubs had offered a three-year deal worth $44 million to Schmidt. This report was latter refuted by the Chicago Tribune.

...last night, after the people began questioning the chronicle report, the buzz from chicago suggested that it could take as much as $60 million over four-years to land schmidt

Hmm.... ... is 4/60 too much?

I really don't think a team that was the 3rd worst in baseball last year should be favored for anything.

What worries me is I can't remember a time when Steve Phillips was right.

No way. Let's not get carried away here folks. The Cubs have upgraded at one position and even with D-Lee healthy all year their offense is no great shakes, especially with Soriano leading off.

Even if they get Shmidt they will still have to hope DeRosa, Barret, Aramis, Jones, Soriano, and Lee (2005) don't regress, in addtion to hoping Izturis and/or Cedeno can significantly improve.

Their rotation after Z and Shmidt is not guarenteed to be any better than last year's.

The Cubs have a long way to go before they can be considered a contender. A long way.

In 05, Steve Phillips said the Astros and the Whitesox would be the two worst teams in the league. We all know how that ended up.

Well, fortunately, is was not Phillips' report: he was just talking about how good the Cubs would potentially be with him. His opinion: still not good enough.

Yes, but it needs to be done.

Is Gammons reliable or is he like Olney? Although I guess reliability doesn't matter because I think it was his opinion...

4/60 for Schmidt is insane.

It seems like every signing this offseason has been insane:

Soriano, CLee, Pierre, GMJR, etc.

Because since 2003 that has been the story of the cubs.

I should have said: Here we go again ...

No, 5/55 for Darren Dreifort is insane. 4/60 for Schmidt is overpaying to get a good pitcher.

Not when he is 34yrs old and breaking down.

Yeah that would've made sense. I thought you were rolling your eyes at what Jazz said about us competing with the Mets next year.
