If Lugo is going to be 8m per, I'm quite pleased we are out of the picture.

I like the guy, but not that much.

Well you gotta think about this, is Lugo 3.5 mil better than Izturis? Izturis makes 4.5, Lugo could make 8. If we get Lugo, I'm sure we move Izturis out of town.

Is there any word on whether the Cubs still have (or ever did, for that matter) an offer on the table for Drew?

The last I heard, was that Boston offer Drew a "good deal", and that 'Piniella's Cubs have matched the offer" and that was a few days ago. So, who knows if there is a legit offer (seeing as Boras is the agent), or if the Cubs even are going to keep any offer they may have made on the table, with the hopes that the Cubs have CF open and the job would Drew (who is said to prefer CF to the corner spot).

If the Cubs sign Drew and then trade Jones for pitching I'll be quite impressed with Hendry this off season.

Imagine that lineup. I would be impressed too but I don't see that happening. We still have to spend money on pitching.

If Hendry can sign Shmidt, I will be impressed. If Shmidt stays healthy I will be more impressed.

I think if Hendry gets a top of the rotation starter out of this offseason he will have had a smashing success... at least on paper.

Ken Rosenthal[/url]"]The Cubs didn't stop pursuing free agent Julio Lugo after signing Mark DeRosa to play second base. And they haven't stopped pursuing Lugo after signing Alfonso Soriano to be a $136 million outfielder, FOXSports.com has learned.

How Lugo would fit into the Cubs' plans remains unclear. He could bat second behind Soriano or first if Soriano hit in the middle of the order. He could start out in center field, then move back to shortstop if the Cubs promoted top prospect Felix Pie and/or parted with shortstop Cesar Izturis, whose contract expires after next season.

Lugo, 31, was a favorite of new Cubs manager Lou Piniella's with the Devil Rays. His athleticism intrigues the Cubs, who could field an electrifying lineup if they added Lugo to a mix that will include Soriano, first baseman Derrek Lee and third baseman Aramis Ramirez — and eventually Pie.

The likelihood of Pie's emergence — possibly in 2007, probably no later than '08 — has caused the Cubs to back off free-agent center fielder Gary Matthews Jr., who would block Pie, 21, if he signed a long-term deal. Lugo, on the other hand, would be versatile enough to return to the infield.

From the sound of Rosenthal's article (assuming he's correct, which could be a stretch), it sounds like the Cubs are indeed intent on playing Soriano in a corner if they don't want to block Pie.

Good news about Lugo, good news about Matthews.

I'm not convinced he's going to be amazing, but for some reason I'm really excited for when Pie finally makes it on the Cubs. Probably just because I've been hearing about him for so long.

If nothing else, his amazing defensive range in center and pure athletic ability will be something very interesting to watch.

Lugo to lead off, Soriano to bat 2nd anyone? Free-swinging Fonzie gets to see a lot of good pitches, no Izzy, everybody's happy.

Lugo SS

Soriano RF

Lee 1B

Ramirez 3B

Barrett C

Murton LF

(whoever plays CF)

DeRosa 2B

Lugo in CF until Pie is ready, then switching back to short would be OK by me.

Lugo is going to cost nearly twice as much as Jones and need twice as long as an obligation. And will probably be slightly less productive. Although I agree that this team would be better subtracting some power for OBP. Jones will have good production in CF (very good if platooned) at a cheap price. If we do get rid of him, I hope it nets a quality hole filler in return. Other than the obvious (Drew), I would like Crisp.

SS Lugo yes

Julio Lugo-SS-Dodgers Nov. 21 - 12:06 am et

According to FOXSports.com's Ken Rosenthal, the Cubs are continuing to pursue free agent Julio Lugo.

They're not going to leave anything for anyone else? Rosenthal doesn't know whether Lugo would play shortstop or center field for the team. If manager Lou Piniella wants his former player back as a shortstop, the Cubs could then look to send Cesar Izturis to Boston or Toronto.
