I could tell you no offer has been made (remember, Lugo bats right-handed and the Cubs haven't exhausted LH possibilities yet), and it would be true, but I remember how much fun that was the other day with Schmidt.

yeah, Bruce, you're becoming a real buzzkill!

just kidding, of course. This board -- myself included -- could use the occasional "buzzkill." :)

Do you think they will look for a lefty shortstop, or a lefty CF and deal Jones?

They like Izturis a lot so I don't see them trading him. The latter is more of a real possibility.

Is it a real possibility to think the Cubs will look to deal Murton and Jones and also try to get a bigger bat in LF and just put the LH-bat of Pie in CF?

although, as a few others have said, if the Cubs truly want an impact LH bat they could just sign Bonds.

This is what absolutely kills me. How can someone like a no hit-slick fielding SS a lot? They are a dime a dozen. The Cubs seem to have employed seemingly just about every single one of them over the last 3 or so years.

If they went out and grabbed a JD Drew type for the last spot in the outfield and then picked up a Mark Loretta type to play 2b, I think the Cubs could get by. Maybe that's the plan, but with Vernon Wells or someone of that caliber rather than Drew.

I've seen Izturis play enough that I just don't understand the manlove he's getting. And after a nearly 2 year layoff, he's bound to be even worse than he was before. Maybe we should sign Marquis. At least then we can count on more offensive production from the pitcher's spot than wherever Piniella decides to bat Izturis.

It's highly doubtful they'd trade BOTH Murton and Jones. They're not assuming Pie will be ready on Opening Day. They won't sign Bonds.

This makes me cry. I'd love to see a Lee-Bonds-Ramirez middle of the order.

Bruce, what lefty hitting CFers are out there to pursue?

Are we talking Lofton?

They're looking at every possibility, including putting Jock there. Nothing is firm yet as trades take a lot more work than do free-agent signings.

I like that they're still looking at the lineup, even with Soriano. Next week has some potential for big time moves. ( I said that last year too, but I might be right this time.)

Whoops I meant Murton OR Jones. So then we can just assume one of the two will be the starting LF or is an impact bat like Manny more reality than dream scenario? Not that it will happen but not out of the realm of possibility.

Which bats are even available for CF that hit LH and won't block Pie? I think Vance mentioned Lofton. He's the only one I see that might only sign a 1-year deal. Interesting off-season! Thanks Bruce!

I'm sure part of their reasoning is that they'll be batting Izturis eighth and not second, where Dusty had him in the order.

Ryan Church and Gabe Gross would be ideal candidates.

Why? The offensive production would be epic.

It's because he prefers scrappy gamers and pitchers who suck in the regular season but might have a chance to win postseason games.

Both would fit great in our lineup. Can Church play CF?

Don't know how well, but it was his primary position in 2006. If the Cubs could manage a trade that brings them Westbrook and Michaels, aand then added Church, they would have a pretty nice CF situation. And neither would be blocking Pie (but could serve as solid 4th OF in the future).
