I think its bogus! Isnt he not a good teamate by the way? Just wondering?

Supposedly hes quiet and stays to himself, no one said he was a bad teammate that I heard.

Drew is very religious. The one gripe on him is that he's been rumored to try to proseltyze (sp?) in the clubhouse.

ok, well if its not a distraction im up for it.

Are you kidding? He could walk around wearing a "cuck the fubs" t-shirt for all i care, As long as he puts up numbers and the team wins, its all good.

Or he could just be cool and wear a personal favorite of mine, a "suck the fox" shirt.

More than likely, he wears this shirt.

hard to imagine offering drew more than ramirez . . .

If you think about it, that kind of contract might not be all to suprising if Hendry really is changing his style. Last year he was the slowest GM in baseball, and made barely any moves at the beginning of the offseason. Now, he will make a quick strike at a top FA target. That would be his final offer. If Drew and Boras took to long to look at the offer, and weren't definitive on an answer, Hendry will have moved on to another target for the the OF in a week or so. At least im hoping thats what this kind of large offer would mean.

I think your right Jazz I think Hendry might change his style based on the way Frucal screwed them last season.

The Red Sox certainly aren't messing around. As SI.com reported Monday, they are about to make an offer to free-agent outfielder J.D. Drew that is expected to be for at least $44 million over four years, and perhaps more. Boston obviously is trying to ensure that it doesn't have two straight years of missing the playoffs.

to some up the various offers rumored in major publications

Drew at 11M per

Soriano at 16-18M per

even if Drew is out 1/4-1/3 of every single year and Soriano plays every single game every year, Drew is by far the better value.

Absolutely 100% agree. JD plz... the Cubs can and should outbid Boston here.

Here's a thread with the BoSox updated current committed budget. They've said they want to stay within the luxury tax threshold of $148M. The posting fee -- whatever it turns out to be -- doesn't count against that payroll. The link above assumes a $140ishM payroll.

Depends on the contracts, but they shouldn't have a problem affording both and staying within the $148M.

Where is Boston getting all this cash? 40MM for posting fee. 20-50MM for Matsuzaka contract. 44MM for Drew? WTH

edit: doh! see above post.

Still doesn't make sense why Boston spends $148 million and the Cubs $100.

They're competing with the Yankees. We're spending as much if not more than our division rivals.

Money isn't the issue. It's how it's spent.

Jones + Izturis + Dempster + Rusch = $17MM

Howry + Eyre (luxuries) = $8MM

Prior (never healthy) = $4MM

There's nearly $30MM in money for players that essentially do not make your 90+ loss team any better. Ouch.

Howry and Eyre do make your team better but the money that they are being paid, namely Eyre, is the issue. Also, I don't think you can really count Jacque Jones in there as somebody who doesn't make the team any better. It's true that, if counted on as a major player in the lineup then it's not worth it. But Jacque should not be counted on as a Lee or Ramirez type player and isn't being paid to be such a player.

The average ticket price at Fenway is over $45 (2004 numbers). That's at least $10 higher than the average at Wrigley. Multiply the numbers by their attendence and you have most of the difference.

Thanks for the laugh. That's the most ridiculous thing I've read today!

trying to fan the flames to get this jd drew fire started...

A day after committing $13 million to utility man/second baseman Mark De Rosa, the Cubs re-signed backup catcher Henry Blanco for two years and an option at $5.25 million. Hendry also continued his pursuit of J.D. Drew and Alfonso Soriano.

According to sources, Boston and the Cubs have expressed the most interest in Drew, who used an early-out clause to reach free agency only two years into a five-year, $55 million deal with the Dodgers. He's believed to be seeking $14 million a year for four or five years.

does "and" mean hendry would want both? there's no way they could afford drew and soriano...

I don't know, I'm too happy (and drunk) to think straight.
