Except Iwamura doesn't play 2B.

From everything I've seen he said he could play 3B, 2B, or CF.

From what he's claimed he can play 3B, 2B, or CF. He hasn't played a game of 2B in his career and has all of 29 put outs in the OF. Great marketing ploy for him, but signing him to be your full time 2B when he hasn't played an inning there is a pretty big risk.

If DeRosa is the alternative, I take that risk, especially considering we have Theriot on the team who could handle 2B at least adequately.

Scouts have also talked about him moving to 2B, and I know he's played some 2B during the MLB-NPB All-Star series. I have him on tape. Small, small sample but I remember him making a few highlight-real worthy plays. Maybe that's where the scout talk stems.

Also, do you have access to fielding data for the 2006 Japanese baseball season? I don't believe it's been released in English yet.

Ugh....I'm trying to stay positive and fine the bright side of the Derosa signing....but we could have had Iwamura for what we paid for Derosa. I really hope Hendry has something bigger in mind with this cause right now that just seems kind of ridiculous.

You have no way of knowing that. If Iwamura signs a 3/10 deal, then he would have been more expensive than Derosa. The 4.2 already bid was only for the rights to negotiate a contract with him. That's not his contract. He'll end up being more costly than Derosa.

You know what this says to me...

Dukes, Upton, Gomes, Catu (bleh), Brignac, or SOMEONE decent, young, cheap, and talented is available.

The DRays are disgustingly loaded right now.

Upton or Dukes please.

And seriously, WTF were the Cubs doing? The Cubs are a team that could take huge advantage of the Japanese market, and Iwamura would have been a nice start. I have 0 doubt he's going to end up a solid player for the D-Rays.

Rumor is he will be playing 3B. Meaning Longoria is probably moving to 2B, Upton is positionless, unless they descide to keep him at SS after messing with him for 3 years. The OF is full, Brignac is the backup plan at SS except he might outgrow it and play 3B. Guzman, Bankston, Dukes (seeing time at 1B), Gomes, and a whole lot of talent is just waiting to come through and find a position.

While they have Hellickson, Davis, McGee in the lower minors, they need some pitching prospects.

For all the talk of trying to fleece TB, who do the Cubs have worth anywhere near what TB would be giving up? I don't see the Cubs giving up Rich Hill, who else is there worth anything?

TB isn't going to give up anyone on the cheap, avail. and being able to acquire them are two diff. issues.

I would give up Hill for Baldelli

And what else? Hill is probably a good starting point.

Another example of over-valuing your own team's prospects. Every fan of a team does it.

well, the bidding fee will be in addition to whatever contract is agreed upon, so this guy'll probably cost more, but your point is still valid, since the Cubs didn't seem to have been bidding.

no but I've read from a source in Japan that I trust on another board that he can't handle 2B or CF.

What board? What's his user name? Is he a scout or fan?

I really think he is just throwing darts(much like the past two offseasons) hoping to hit someowhere on the board.

Can we please fantasize about one of the DRays talented players NOT named Baldelli.

He's probably one of the first ones. I mean he's been injured, he's got no plate discipline, I have no idea if he showed any power until this year.

They have a ton of guys I'm sure they'd listen to offers for. And they DO need pitching, I wouldn't mind giving up Hill if it landed us an Upton or a Dukes.

I'll take Baldelli and his .871 OPS in CF. Drew in RF. Trade Izturis and JJ for anything and sign Lugo to play SS.

Lugo

Murton

Lee

Drew

Ramirez

Baldelli

Barrett

DeRosa

I don't like handing DeRosa the 2b job, but that's probably what would happen. Our top 7 hitters are pretty solid too, so I don't see it as a problem.
