Before you get too excited, I have zero clue if this guy holds any creditbility. I was talking Bulls and this article about Carter came across the wiretap, and low and behold the author drops this little nugget in there.

In baseball, the Chicago Cubs are planning a big trade pitch to the Blue Jays for Vernon Wells ... The Philadelphia Phillies are trying to obtain Miguel Batista, a starting pitcher with the Arizona Diamondbacks the past season after serving as the Jays’ closer in 2005 ... Juan Samuel, another ex-Jay, will be hired as the Baltimore Orioles’ first-base coach this week ... Jose Oquendo, third-base coach for the St. Louis Cardinals, is the leading candidate to become the San Diego Padres’ new manager ... The Jays have changed their minds about dumping Ernie Whitt and will keep him as their bench coach, after all ... The New York Mets likely will bolster their lineup with two major free-agent acquisitions — pitcher Barry Zito and second baseman Ronnie Belliard ... In the NHL, the Philadelphia Flyers are dangling forward Simon Gagne as trade bait ... The Chicago Blackhawks are trying to deal defenceman Jassen Cullimore ... And forgive Carolina quarterback Jake Delhomme for his clunker against the Dallas Stars Sunday night. A 47-year-old woman was jailed earlier in the day on charges of stalking him.

Obviously, a one liner like that might be the author pulling something out of his behind, but I thought I'd post it nonetheless.

What do we have to get Wells?

We would have to pretty much empty our minor leagues.

Nope, he's a FA after '07

Wells is a nice player, but I don't like him for our circumstances.

If Hendry made a play for him, i'm sure he'd plan on extending him during the season after last year's one year rental in Pierre.

He's an elite CF, and we need an elite position player somewhere. We currently have no center fielder. Who knows what Pie will ever do in his career?

Why are we trying to upgrade CF with Pie in the wings? Anyone?

We need a platoon partner for Jones. That should have been done last year. I have no clue if Dusty nixed that idea, or if the organization is just blind to how hopeless he is against RHP.

We need starting pitching in the worst way.

We need a MIF.

We need a bench full of non scrubs. Yes, Freddie Bynum, that means you.

Why trade away prospects for a non pressing need when our farm system isn't that deep to begin with?

I hope this rumor is bogus. You know they fly fast and furious this time of the year and up through ST anyway.

His 2004 and 2005 weren't elite. Unless he's actually turned the corner offensively, I'd pass.

Why can't we have two CF? Why can't Pie play RF? Pie probably should not even play in Chicago this next season anyways.

agreed...what if JH can pull off soriano for 2B as well...a frontline pitcher and a journeyman...wow, we could actually win games...any ideas on how this fits into the payroll?

Jones can't hit LHP. But other than that typo, I agree with everything you said.

RF is supposed to be one of the most productive positions on the field. Hendry has made light of the problem RF has been for the last few years. Jones does fix half the problem, but someone has to be able to hit a lefty starter. Especially with all the lefty starters in the NL Central.

I think if the Cubs trade for Wells that Soriano no longer becomes a target, which would mean to me that they don't want to spend the type of money Soriano will command.

I remember the Cubs passing on Jim Thome because Hee Seop Choi was waiting in the wings. Perhaps they remember that as well.

In that case, it was a good idea. Thome was aging. In hindsight, it might look like a bad move, but the Cubs had one of the top 20 prospects in the game, and Thome was a 32-year old, seeking a 5-6 year deal in the double digit millions.

I realize it's not a direct parallel, but my point is that the Cubs may look back on a situation like that, and the "youth movement" we had this season, and want to have veteran guys in there instead of young guys. And if they can get value back for Pie, I could see that approach, especially being a major market team that can supposedly afford the higher priced, proven talent.

I want really good players, regardless of position.

If one of the very few position players in our weakened farm system ends up being a stud who can compete for the position -- awesome! Let's cross that bridge when we come to it.

It would definitely suck to have an excess of talented players on the team.

What if Pie is part of the trade for Wells?

Like this trade?

Vernon Wells and BJ Ryan for Felix Pie and Ryan Dempster.

Who's with me? :P

I do that, though I do it realizing Soriano probably isn't an option if I do. I do that if I'm Hendry, because Hendry is under the gun to win. He has to turn this team around very very soon.

I would have preferred looking at a longer-term plan for winning, because part of the Cubs' problem has been this cycle of never rebuilding, always trying to improve on mediocrity. But that's not going to happen.

I believe in Pie. But I don't believe in reserving the position for him if he's not going to be playing it next year. Under these circumstances, you look at the team that will be taking the field next year and he's not on it. If he's a stud, that's a good problem to have.

Do people want an OF of Murton / Pie / Someone Else next year?
