Interesting...very interesting. I think it might be a very good thing indeed. I now want to learn more about this Alan Trammell of which you speak. Edited by CuseCubFan69

From what I know about Trammell, love him as a bench coach. Don't know if I want him as the next manager when Lou leaves. I think Trammell could be a great help to Cedeno, as he was a great defender. If the Cubs get Soriano and play him at 2B, Trammell could be a big help there also. He wasn't a particularly good basestealer, but was regarded as a pretty good baserunner. So, I suppose he could help out there.

The biggest thing I hope he could help out with was the general patience of the team. Trammell was a career .093 BB/PA guy, which is pretty good. He was a very patient hitter, who made great contact (850 BB to 874 K, with the extra 24 Ks coming in his last 3 seasons at age 36-38).

On the down side, he was a great bunter and perrenially was among the AL's best in sac bunts. Hope he keeps that to himself.

I agree w/ your assessment. I think Trammell makes a good addition as bench coach. Just guessing here, but I don't think he enjoys dealing with the daily media pressure that a manager has to go through. He seems like a behind-the-scenes type guy. I think people underestimate that certain types of people play second banana better and once they are the "head guy" it changes a lot of what they have to do.

I don't think Tremmell was ready to be a manager when he was hired by the Tigers. I think through time he will be a fine manager and by learning the ropes from Lou could be a very good thing in his development in becoming a good manager.

After learning on the bench from Lou, he might be ready to take over especially if the Cubs manage to build a winner in the next 3 years.

He's the greatest non-all star lead off hitter in RBI baseball.

He's also one of, if not THE best shortstop not in the HOF.

I've always wondered what was keeping him out, considering the era he played in. Trammell and Whitaker were a beastly double play combo.

Agrred. And then you take in account the numbers of 2 current HOFers who play SS, and compare them with Trammell's:

.260/.299/.367

.262/.337/.328

.285/.352/.415

First line is Bill Mazeroski (yeah, a REAL HOF statline, ain't it)

Second line is Ozzie Smith (HTH do you have a higher OBP then slg?)

Third line is Alan Trammell. Alan is CLEARLY better then both Ozzie and Bill, and those two boneheads are in the HOF and Trammell is not? Apparently Alan Trammell has what Sandberg had, and what Santo currently have, the disdain of Joe Morgan. Becuase if Maz and Smith are HOFers, then according to that logic, Trammell would be an elite of the HOF.

I thought Mazerowski was a second baseman?

Correct. 2094 games at 2B, 10 at 3B, 0 at SS.

I REALLY like the idea of Alan Trammell in the dugout everyday, available to help the infielders with defense, available to help the hitters learn some plate discipline. I'd have been happy with him as the hitting coach, too. Though I'm hoping Von Joshua gets that job.

Trammell and Whitaker may well be the most underrated double-play combo in big league history. Don't understand why, it's not like Detroit is a small market team with no history or fan base. And they have a ring together. Weird.
