Everyone in Philadelphia hates everything.

They booed Santa Clause, that's all you need to know

It wasn't that great of a movie, to be fair.

What movie? That actually happened.

It was a joke because the e was added on to the end of Santa Claus, which made it the movie with Tim Allen in it rather than the person.

I faintly remember hearing about them booing Santa, but could someone refresh my memory on the whole story?

And nice reference with Santa Clause....cant wait for the conclusion of the trilogy.

You mean the "greatest holiday trilogy of all time?"

I knew Burrell was being given the Abreu treatment in Philly(hated for no apparent reason), but I didn't realize his #s were that solid. He'd cost pretty much nothing to boot.

Their treatment of very good players is really weird. Do that fans hate these guys or just managment?

philly fans are the most obnoxious in all of sports. plus, the philly accent may be the most terribly annoying accent in existence.

Abreu was a bed wetter?

near as I can tell, their fans hate everything.

Burrell sucked the year after he signed his big contract, and to them, that is unforgivable. Now, anything he does is meaningless, especially since the team hasn't won much.

This is why I predicted the Abreu trade. I thought for a couple years that Burrell and/or Abreu would be dealt, because Philly turns on its stars when the team around them is not good. It's similar to the ARod situation in NY. As a close, but outside observer of the Philly sports scene, it's very easy to see when a player loses the town, and when he becomes must trade material. Philly people hated Abreu for "meaningless" homeruns and being too patient. If the Cubs had a competent GM it was a situation ripe for ripping them off and filling a huge need on the team.

Have I ever mentioned my one big regret about the trade deadline this year? :D

BenMaller.com is hinting that a Burrell-Beltre trade might make sense. Both players have a lot of money owed and the Phillies need a 3B and protection for Ryan Howard.

Gillick is now talking as if Burrell will not be traded.

"There's a very strong possibility that Pat's in leftfield," said Gillick, who noted that despite Burrell's .258 average and his .222 mark with runners in scoring position, "You don't find 29 home runs and 95 RBI in the street."

While he could be posturing to drive up Burrell's value, this is a change from earlier statements.

A GM saying there is a strong possibility that his current left fielder, who is under contract for a couple year, is going to be his left fielder, is hardly a ringing endorsement.

If Gillick can get anything of value and relieve himself of most of Burrell's contract, he will be traded asap.

That's odd because Beltre is absolutely, f********* horrible. Odd, though.

He's certainly absolutely horrible on the downside. But he does have a 106 OPS+ for his career and was at 108 last year. And for what it's worth, baseballreference.com lists Ron Santo as his most similar batter by age. He's way overpaid, but cheaper than Burrell the next two years (and less productive).

Didn't Hendry consistently say that Sosa was going to be his right-fielder in 2005?

I believe the phrasing was something like, "as of right now, I am assuming Sammy Sosa will be our RF next year".

According to the Washington Post, Pat Burrell said he would only waive his no-trade clause to go to a contender. I wonder if the Cubs would fit that description....I wouldn't think so.

Link.

But, according to a source close to Burrell, the outfielder won't waive his no-trade clause to play for the Orioles because he would prefer to play for a contending team

http://www.rotoworld.com adds this commentary:

Reports at midseason indicated that Burrell would only waive his no-trade clause to go to the Yankees or Red Sox.

It seems as if we might have to mark Burrell off the list of options.

I don't imagine that it precludes the Cubs... but rather that he wouldn't be willing to accept the trade until he thought the Cubs had signed enough people to make the club a contender.

If we were to re-sign Aramis, get Matsuzaka, and trade for ARod, Burrell would jump at the opportunity, I'm sure.

Burrell would be stupid to NOT leave Philly. They don't want him there. If it becomes public that he vetoed a trade that could have made the team better, he will be hated more. I don't blame him for not wanting to go to Baltimore, but I would guess he wouldn't mind playing for the Cubs.

Burrell just needs to feel loved and in control.

I'm sure if Lou and Hendry flew to wherever he was, they could get him to waive. Particularly if the deal came after other signings.

I rather keep Murton. I have a feeling Murton is going to have a break out year in 07.

If Burrell can play RF, then it would be something the cubs should consider.

Murton would have a better shot at playing RF than Burrell. But hey, he only has to hit the cutoff man, right?

Everytime I think of Burrell I think of that 03 season: .209 Average, .308OBP 21 HR, 64RBI, .404 SLG, and 142 K's

Cubs need a CF, not another LF.

Vernon Wells!!!!!

He has the arm for it, and probably wouldn't be much worse defensively than Sosa was his last 5-6 years with the Cubs.
