First of all, I still think the Cubs are going to lose Ramirez but if ARam does stay, would aquirering Burrell make the team too right handed if Jones is traded? It would be ok as long as the rightys can hit rightys but I don't know the splits. I'd rather have a Murton, Jones, Burrell OF if it's possible along with Durham at 2nd.

I don't believe in "too right handed". I think too many managers get caught up in L/R lineups, instead of the best hitters. Besides, the Cubs are actually middle of the pack in the NL for OPS against righties, and at the bottom against lefties.

Isn't Wrigley better for RH hitters anyways? Or is that what you were saying?

I was actually saying the Cubs are worse against lefties than righties, so it wouldn't hurt to replace Jones with Burrell. The righties in Wrigley issue is another topic. I'm not sure if it's true or not. The Cubs really haven't employed any great LH hitters in recent years, so it's hard to say if it's the chicken or the egg. Adam Dunn has been better in Wrigley than all but 2 other stadiums. Although that's just one example of course.

I agree with you that as long as a guy can hit both L/R it doesn't matter whether he is a lefty or righty batter. It seems like Hendry believes that having a mix is important though. I think he would do Jones for Burrell though.

So Murton and Burrell manning the corner OF positions. That might be ugly but probably no worse than watching Jones and Murton out there.

Depending on your definition of "great," the list of left-handed hitters that have had great years as a Cub throughout the history of the franchise isn't very long compared to other teams.

After watching JJ and JP take curious routes to balls and lob them back in from the OF, I don't really care about OF defense anymore. The more I think about Burrell & Murton in the corners, the more I like it. If you sign Soriano for 2B/CF, you could construct a pretty good lineup out of this lot.

Philly people hated Abreu for "meaningless" homeruns and being too patient.

This is a good point.

I've heard Burrell and Abreu criticized by several fans for not being aggressive enough. That's a bizarre thought from a Cub fan's perspective - God knows (but apparently Hendry doesn't) that we need more patient hitters.

But the Phillies fans have groaned for years when Abreu or Burrell take a walk in an RBI situation only to have the abyss that's been the bottom of their order make the third out.

I think the Phillies want a more aggressive middle of the order hitter.

--->JJ's got aggressive figured out.

I guess the point I made that I bolded didn't count, eh?

What do you mean not count? I just don't think "too right handed" is a problem, even if Burrell replaces Jones. The Cubs problem is they don't hit lefties.

Interestingly enough, when he had his terrible 2003, the deal was so backloaded he wasn't even costing them much. He made $2.5M. (base $1M plus signing bonus)

Also I'm sure a lot of casual fans are looking at his 2006 and thinking: he cant even hit .260 with 30HR and 100RBI (.258 29 95). He's also top 20 in strikeouts (ignore the fact he's top 15 in BB)

It is a problem if the rightys or leftys in the lineup can't hit rightys and that's why I said I didn't know the splits on the players to be able to tell if the move would work.

And I was just pointing out that the Cubs do hit righties relatively well (compared to how they hit lefties). The Cubs have multiple guys with an OPS over 800 and a couple over 900 against RHP.

Now take away Jones and add Burrell and how do the numbers add up?

Burrell is still well over 800 against RHP. Jones was 50 points higher in OPS against RHP this season, and actually lower from 2003-2005.

Since you wrote the Cubs struggled against leftys, did Burrell hit them well too? I know Jones struggled.

First of all I'm a Red Sox fan but:

1) I would love to have Dempster in the Sox pen right now.

2) I know Burrell came up as a 3B, so I would think that maybe he could be tried out as a 1B (not an option for the cubs I konw) but since he's such a bad OF, I think the Sox should take a chance and see if he can move to 1B.

Perfect. Jones for Burrell. Straight up. Works for me.

Everyone in Philadelphia hates everything.

They booed Santa Clause, that's all you need to know

It wasn't that great of a movie, to be fair.

What movie? That actually happened.

It was a joke because the e was added on to the end of Santa Claus, which made it the movie with Tim Allen in it rather than the person.

I faintly remember hearing about them booing Santa, but could someone refresh my memory on the whole story?

And nice reference with Santa Clause....cant wait for the conclusion of the trilogy.
