heres what one guy on their board wrote...

Couple of rumors floating around that the Yankees won with a bid of $27 million (just beating Texas' offer of $25 million). The Lions are meeting in Japan today at 2 pm (Japanese time) which I believe is 10 pm eastern time here. Maybe we'll know for sure later on tonight.

yeah I read that rumor last night so I don't think it is true either. If the winning bid were 27 mil they would have accepted it yesterday. The longer it takes the better chance we have because that means they are probably mulling a low ball offer. Maybe, just maybe, hendry tried to make a low bid but everyone else bid even lower.

if the cubs win the bidding but the lions choose not to accept their offer, i'm injecting heroin into my forehead on the doorstep of one of the lions' owners

it's going to be hard for me to do this twice, so hopefully both of these things don't happen

Actually the rumor is

Cubs 28M

Yanks 27M

Rangers 25M

BoSox 18M

The rumor would not come out of Japan, it would have to come out of the MLB offices in NYC. The Lions initially would only know what the highest bid is, then upon accepting the bid, they would be told who the team was. Only MLB knows all the teams that bid and how much.

this isn't really the time or place for this anymore, I understand, but . . .

how good is this guy realistically expected to be in the MLB? I've seen his numbers from Japan and the WBC, but what kind of stat translation are we expecting? I mean we're paying as much as $30M just to negotiate with him?

Here's THT's projection

Dammit. I have just enough hope in the Cubs chances to have pulled this off that I'll actually stay up tonight to find out!

On the plus side, it's nice caring about this team again :)

That scouting report is cool. He throws more sliders for strikes than fastballs? Thats plain weird. I know its only 199 pitches but there is a 20% difference in these 2. Cool chart though.

Well I guess notihng new in Japan this is what the one guy is sayin

Just another quick note to amuse you, and keep you occupied. The Japanese tabloids are periodically producing news this morning, just as the American media seems to be doing. We're scouring the wires in Japan for anything new, and they are quoting US papers and media.

Basically, both sides of the ocean are looking to the other for information, but all anyone can dig up is that no one knows anything. Brilliant!! The Watch continues......

Matsuzaka Watch[/url]"]Two tabloids are reporting that their is tension at the Seibu offices as a result of a possible low bid. Speculation has been widely made, including here, that the winner may produce upwards of $30 million just to speak with Matsuzaka. These new reports suggest that the amount was substantially lower, and that it may even be half of that....an Ichiro-like posting bid. I can't say that I believe any of this, as I find it hard to imagine that someone didn't bid over $20 million, as hyped as this free agent market is, but I suppose it is possible. If true, the Seibu board will have a tough choice to make today. Do you accept the lowball bid, and count yourself lucky you got anything for Matsuzaka, or do you retract him from the market and allow him to walk in the winter of 2007 for nothing? On one hand, you have cash in hand, but you feel shortchanged. On the other hand, you get the draw of Matsuzaka for another season, a chance at the title, but you risk pissing him off, disappointing a large fan base in two countries, and walking away empty handed next year. Is one more contentious season of Matsuzaka in Seibu blue and white worth $15 million? Only they can answer that, if the rumors are true. Again, I doubt it, but anything is possible.

The guy who runs this website is a Yankee fan who lives in Japan.

I've been monitoring that site and have to say, I'm disappointed to point out that Matsuzaka is not going to be a FA in the winter of 2007. He will still be under the Lion's control. So, they could retract him from the market and post him again next year (not "allow him to walk in the winter of 2007 for nothing") if they feel that they do not have a satisfactory offer. Which, if the reports that the highest bid is in the 15M range are true (which I do not believe), they could send a message to MLB that if they really want Matsuzaka they can bid next year for 30M. Its a risky move especially because if Matsuzaka gets hurt they will be SOL. Also, the team is in poor financial shape, but I have to believe if its worth 15M more, they might just hold out a year.

nilodnayr, where did you hear that rumor from? I've tried to read almost every page in this thread but maybe I missed one.

that was the rumor from the yankees version of cubs.com from two posters. It wasn't exactly debunked as a troll, but revised to say that the report didnt say who won, just quoted what teams bid what. Not that its confirmed by anyone, but just wanted to point that out.

Im sure its bunk though.
