If Listach really had a hand in creating the new Rich Hill, heh, I'd love to see him get a job. 3rd base coach? Any reason that a 3rd base coach can't work with pitchers before games?

If not I'd love to see all of our coaches be actual coaches. Ryno for First Base Coach? :D

I don't understand the Listach comment. Care to elaborate O_O?

Listach was one of the primary reasons why Rich Hill did so well in AAA.

Quade I don't know so much about.

Listach was at West Tenn this year, Quade at Iowa.

The person I've heard Hill credited the most was actually pitching coach Alan Dunn.

Whoops, I was thinking about Alan Dunn.

I just hope him and the Cubs decide to agree on something soon... Because if he is interviewed by someone else, he'll likely get offered something better... ex: Rafael Furcal in the previous off-season.

I get a feeling - for better or worse, I really don't know - Girardi will sign on with the Cubs if they satisfy two criteria;

a) they offer him a contract

b) the money is semi-respectable

I think he wants the Cubs job.

Girardi may want the Cubs job, but if the Nats were to offer him a job, I wouldn't expect him to hang around hoping that Hendry might eventually offer him something.

I heard (I can't remember where) that Girardi was really only interested in two jobs - the Cubs and Yankees. I also have heard that he has broadcasting offers to fall back on if he wants to wait for a suitable position.

I'd rather have the Cubs job. There's pressure, but it's good pressure. Just win games and compete on a regular basis and they'll love you forever (note that it took almost halfway into the 2006 season for most of the Cubs fan base to turn on Dusty Baker after two winning seasons to start things off). Win a World Series and you're a hero for life.

I think Joe wants that.

Personally, as long as Lou is off the table I have no problem with any of the remaining candidates I've heard mentioned (except Fregosi, but he's only been brought up in passing and we haven't heard from him in well over a week now).

A little off-topic, but I seriously think the Marlins GM is an idiot for letting Girardi go. He's likely manager of the year, and he took a $15 million ballclub to 78 wins. If he was managing a $90 million club, he could have as much as 468 wins.

What are we waiting for?!

I think we're waiting on Bochy. My guess is that Bochy is Hendry's primary target and Girardi is the fallback option.

I think he's waiting on the Yankees/Piniella situation as well as Bochy. Just like everything else, Hendry is reactive to every other team's moves. He never goes out and gets people, he waits for them to come to him.

Girardi is a perfect fit for the Cubs.

If I were rooting for the Cubs - I'd want him. What he did in Florida this year is no small task and the Cubs will have a similar team if they do in fact cut ties with some of the older players.

The Cubs won't have anything close to a team similar to last year's Marlins.

Gammons continues to say that the Cubs aren't enthused about Girardi; Boers or Bernstein (sorry, don't know which one) says he spoke with a 'Cubs insider' who also says that Girardi is not a top choice.

That's simply inaccurate. He certainly missed on Furcal and Beltran. But there are two players I can think of off the top of my head that he went out and got and they performed very well for the Cubs.

Well, the Yankees situation is resolved. Torre is staying. So now about the only guy Hendry could be waiting on is Bochy.

How is that inaccurate? He waited for just about everybody to become available. Some might say he went hard after Barrett, but it took another GM to act as broker to actually get something done. He had guys like Ramirez and Lee fall in his lap after other teams were cutting costs. He's gone after a couple small time role players, like middle relievers. But those guys don't make teams win. He's had plenty of opportunity to actually go out and make this team different, but he's been timid, cautious and much to willing to accept mediocrity, and hand-me-downs.

Wasn't Lee virtually an Indian though. I am forgetting what team it was.

An Oriole, actually. Florida was going to non-tender him, but had a deal fall through with Baltimore. Hendry swoope din at the last moment.

I think it was Baltimore. Regardless, the deal fell through and Hendry got him for Choi. Even though Choi was highly thought of at the time, the trade was completely loppsided due to the fact that Flordia, once again, was cutting payroll.

That will supposedly be his second interview with the Nationals, though his first one might have been a phone interview?

Jayson Stark / ESPN.com[/url]"] Joe Girardi's interview Monday with the Chicago Cubs went so well, he appears to have alleviated most concerns the Cubs' brass may have had over why he was fired in Florida.

According to a source who spoke with high-ranking Cubs officials following the interview, Girardi left a "positive impression" on GM Jim Hendry and other Cubs executives.

"I don't think there are any major concerns about him at this point," the source said. "There were certainly some going in, but every indication is that he handled them very well."

However, Girardi shouldn't start furnishing his manager's office quite yet. Lou Piniella remains very much on the Cubs' radar screen, especially now that they know he won't be hired by the Yankees this winter.

Piniella has low-keyed his interest in the Cubs' job. But he has told friends he believes the Cubs are closer to winning than their last-place finish might suggest. Piniella also is a candidate in San Francisco and Texas. Or he could opt to bide his time and wait on the Yankees' job, with Joe Torre now a year away from the end of his contract and under more pressure from George Steinbrenner than ever.
