I am so sorry to do this, but I heard this over at Cubs.com. Yes I know the general opinion about that place over here. But someone claimed he said it on fox sports a couple of days ago. Did anyone catch him saying that he thinks it's highly likely Soriano will be a Cub next year?

The reason I post this is because Soriano would be my #1 choice because it gets us our big bat and replaces a very unproductive Cedeno and keeps Murton in LF. It's the most logical choice.

If they got him, I bet they'd put him in LF so they could have better D up the middle.

I'm in favor of spending for Soriano if we'll play him at second. Not so much for left.

I'll second this. If they play him in left instead of Murton, I'm gonna flip out.

But otherwise, this is VERY good news, even if false. But I know Hendry has been after Soriano for a while hasn't he?

He has been after Zito for a couple of years now according to Kaplan.

I'm really not gonna count on Hendry doing anything big in the offseason. He'll make a couple of his "moves" and say the Cubs are a contender even though the rest of us know he hasn't done enough to make the Cubs a true contender.

I honestly think people who think that are going to be very suprised. After this HORRENDOUS season, it's almost like fate is forcing them to make some big moves. If they do not, there is going to be such a negative light put toward the Cubs and ownership. They will have a "bad name", so to say.

It's almost like they have to make a big splash just to make up for this terrible year. I fully expect atleast 1 big signing, and Soraino would be a very good choice, if for 2nd, as said. .

Whoever said they dont expect anything out of hendry, im with you. Im fully resigned to the fact he's gonna sit on his fat doughnut eating butt and watch his team sink into oblivion. If he does anything, then its a pleasent surprise.

The Cubs would only be interested in Soriano in LF. He's a butcher at 2B and MIF defense is terribly important to Hendry. He didn't get Izturis to pair him with a horrible double play partner.

Soriano has actually looked pretty solid defensively in LF from what I've seen.

In 2000 the proposed trade was Sammy to the Yankees for Soriano and garbage, right?

IIRC, it was Sosa for Soriano, Nick Johnson, Ricky Ledee, and I think Ted Lilly. Just imagine if we had pulled that off.

Yeah, just imagine--you'd be plenty upset. Sosa almost got the team in the playoffs in 01, and he was our biggest bat in the 03 run. He also put up some mighty fine numbers in 02 and wasn't bad in 04 even, at least until the last month and a half or so.

Meanwhile, Soriano has been hot and cold, Nick Johnson is always hurt, Ricky Ledee is a deadbeat, and Ted Lilly is a dime-a-dozen #4 starter.

Sometimes, the best trades are the ones not made after all....

could soriano play cf? he certainly has the speed and the reads are easier than lf most of the time . . .

I'm almost positive Johnson wasn't in the talks cause the Cubs were sold on Choi at the time. The way I rememberred it Soriano is who the Cubs wanted but the Yankees balked. I'm almost positive Jackson Melian was involved in there somewhere, and I want to say the Yanks countered the Cubs asking for Soriano by offering D'Angelo Jimenez.

EDIT: Did soem googling and came up with this page listing the rumored deals, though it does point out that the end that the best trade for the Cubs listed was unlikely to happen since the Yanks would be giving up too much, so my memory may have actually been right on Soriano being a deal-breaker.

That same year Juan Gonzalez rejected a deal to New York and going to Detroit was going to be Randy Kiesler, Ricky Ledee, and Drew Henson. Sosa may have commanded a little more in a deal, but odds are not too much.

Oh, man this is so depressing. I made almost this exact post a couple of years ago. :(

I don't really want Soriano near this team unless he's playing 2B. Otherwise, he's not even remotely worth the money he'll be receiving.

But it shouldn't be an issue at any rate. If anybody's expecting Hendry to do anything other than drink too much, wait too long, and make a move at that coyote ugly last call... you're in for as rude an awakening as he is.
