Are these announcers showing a little England bias here? Maybe I'm reading too much into it.

Well they are British, one of which played for England.

Well yeah but it's like a local announcer calling his team's game on a national broadcast. Usually they go out of their way to be impartial.

Only when they expect to be broadcasting to the opposing team's fans.

They have been partial towards the US and Mexico as well.

Was Alexi Lalas really good or is he just famous because he looked distinct and was one of the first popularly known American soccer players?

A little of both. He was good relative to what we had, not on a global level.

How in the world do you let Suarez behind you? A draw controls your own destiny assuming CR lose to Italy. I appreciate England going for the win, but [expletive] that is stupid.

Assuming Italy takes care of CR we could have 3 teams with 3 points at the end of this group.

So England needs a win, probably by multiple goals, a Costa Rica loss to Italy, a Uruguay loss to an Italian team that will only care about getting 1 point.

Oh England...you usually don't disappoint until the knockout games.

What a terrible loss. If that happened to us I'd be apoplectic.

Outside of Group winners playing Group runner ups in the first round, how do they seed the knockout stage? Same as the tiebreakers? (Total points, goal differential, total goals, etc.?)

Especially because Godin should have been sent off for a second yellow about 30 minutes in with the score 0-0.

His handball for the 1st yellow could have easily been called DOGSO. He reached out and batted it down, otherwise Rooney was clean through. Really cynical move by Godin.

Three of the last four defending champions have gone out in the group stage.

Costa Rica!

Would be crazy to see Italy-Uruguay be a play-in game for the second round. I believe a draw would send Italy though if CR won by 1 goal today.

It truly is crazy how much hemisphere matters.

I would say its more climate than hemisphere. Plus the seperation between countries is much much smaller than it was even 8 years ago.

And somehow, Costa Rica (+3) is through to the second round and a strong favorite over Italy (+0) and Uruguay (-1) to win the group.

Knockout Scenarios:

Winner of Italy/Uruguay is through

Draw in Italy/Uruguay results in Italy going through
