German win would be ideal, right?

By a million.

I thought I read somewhere that a tie was the optimal outcome?

More optimal to win the group maybe? Ill take the scenario where a USA draw knocks out Ghana and leaves Portugal on life support (would need a win, USA loss, and make up a 5 goal deficit over USA).

This.

A German win and US draw puts us both through.

Edit: that's not completely true. Just likely.

Much more fun to watch Ghana when your team isn't playing them.

Well, they're in the process of screwing us, so I'm not enjoying it all that much. I'd much prefer to play a German team with nothing at stake. If this holds, there's a ton of pressure on us to get the win against Portugal.

No [expletive], but who cares. This is fun. Not over yet by a long shot, either.

Any way it shakes out, tomorrow is must-win.

This. Loew is such a terrible tactical manager. All this talent, and they play slow as crap.

Ugh. Well if this score holds, USA has a great chance to lead the group after 2 games.

Never mind Germany scored. Go for the kill

Now if we tie tomorrow we (+1) root for a draw for Portugal (-4) and Ghana (-1), then a Portugal win.

At least Germany looks beatable

At least Ghana didn't win. That would have been the only bad result.

Doesn't change much for us. Win and we move on. Tie and we're still in decent shape.

The only thing this eliminated was the possibility of advancing without another result.

You're always good with the group dynamics. Is this correct?

Lose tomorrow, we have to beat Germany.

Tie tomorrow we have to tie Germany, beat Germany or lose to Germany and hope Ghana and Portugal tie.

Win tomorrow.

If we beat Portugal:

We qualify and would win the group with a win or draw with Germany

We qualify and would finish 2nd if we lose to Germany

If we draw Portugal:

We would qualify with a win or draw with Germany. (First place if we win, 2nd with a draw)

We would qualify if we lose to Germany and

Portugal and Ghana draw

We only lose to Germany by one goal, Ghana only beats Portugal by one goal AND we win on the goals scored tie breaker.

Portugal beat Ghana AND fail to make up the 5 goal differential

If we lose to Portugal

We qualify if we beat Germany

We qualify if we draw Germany and...

Portugal draw Ghana AND Portugal fails to beat us on tie breakers

Ghana beats Portugal AND Ghana fails to beat us on tie breakers

The fact that it was the craziest [expletive] ever when we beat Portugal in 2002 and now a lot of us are like, yeah, no problem is an indication of how far we've come and also that we are probs over confident ATM.

Totally true. But I was thinking about that game (which is solely responsible for me being a soccer fan) and the goals the US scored. They were nothing like Dempsey's goal against Ghana. This team would trounce that US team, we've come so far.

I don't know if its necessarily overconfidence, but you think about Portugal, and you're getting to play them in the jungle without Pepe, Coentrao and Almeida, and maybe without Bruno Alves as well, and with a less-than-100% CR7...you could not ask for a better opportunity and a better time to play them.

Which probably means we'll come out flat and lose a la Poland 2002.
