The quality and pace of play has been incredible. Beyond that, having it in an accessible time zone is the biggest game-changer, I think.

 

I'm already bummed out about ESPN losing the World Cup to FOX. Russia 2018 is going to be a big step down in quality.

Having champions collapse at a subsequent WC isn't something thats new, just didn't think it would ever be this poor from Spain. I'm pretty sure there is a Costa Curse on Spain from this point forward.

Del Bosque made absolutely terrible decisions today with his lineup. Iniesta without Xavi, or Fabregas was a stupid decision, and Diego Costa isn't any good. He has all that talent on the bench and is pissing it away.

Following the TV ratings - ESPN and Univision are averaging around 3 and 4 million per game respectively. The US game hit 16, the Mexico-Brazil hit 12.

 

Can't help but think that the reliance on Mexican-American money by El Tri is going to be a real problem for them in 10-15 years. The support they get from first generation immigrants is going to be diverted to the US as second generation kids grow up. There's already more crossover between El Tri and the US among mexican americans than people think. A lot of people follow both, if not support both.

I'm going to hold off on propping France up until they beat somebody other than one of the worst two or three teams at the Cup who had to play with 10 men for over half the game. At least Germany was already two goals up before Pepe got sent off. France only scored one goal from open play in that game.
