So we lost 14-8 in the final round of voting...

Where did you find that. So they probably picked up all of Australia's votes. To lose to them 12-10 would be one thing but that was not even very close, looks even worse on FIFA's part.

First round: Australia 1, Japan 3, USA 3, Korea Republic 4, Qatar 11

Second round: Japan 2, Korea 5, USA 5, Qatar 10 votes

Third round: Korea 5, USA 6, Qatar 11

Fourth round: USA 8, Qatar 14

I think Wahl is the source, or AP.

If thats the actually round by round break down this looks even worse than I could have imagined it. Australia and England going out in the 1st round is horrible.

By estimated 2010 population, Qatar has a total of two cities with more than 32,000 people.

That's what I mean, FIFA ignored all of their usual guidelines and requirements.

This is the equivalent of Haiti hosting the World Cup, if Haiti was full of oil.

Easy now, I have fond memories of Haiti in the '74 World Cup. Taking the lead against Italy

I could see going to Israel and Egypt or something, and just flying into Qatar for a game or two. But, if you do that, you're touristing out-of-country and missing most the World Cup, which I love watching. So . . . figures to be the perfect World Cup to watch from the comfort of my own home. Doubt I'll be alone in that sentiment.

This might be exactly FIFA's reasoning: as almost nobody will want to go watch games in Qatar, the TV broadcasting rights will go through the roof (as will FIFA's bank account)

Both decisions were only about money, that much is obvious.

Maybe Vatican City will put in a Bid.

Today's farce raises an interesting question: who, other than maybe China, will even want to bid for 2026?

The US will, as of today though China is not even eligible for it. When is the vote for 2026 is in after the 2018 games?

The US. Our federation's president, Sunil Gulati, has based his legacy on promising a World Cup.

Ugh, I just realized we're going to have weeks upon weeks of people mispronouncing Qatar...

"kuh-TAR"... wrong

"gutter"...wrong

"cutter"...wrong

...

"CUT-ter"...correct

I confess...I always thought it was kuh-TAR.

I'm pretty sure I will mispronounce it on purpose every single time.

2018 Voting Results:

1st Round: England - 2, Holland/Belgium - 4, Spain/Portugal - 7, Russia - 9

2nd Round: Russia - 13, Spain Portugal - 7, Holland/Belgium - 2

So outside of England voting for themselves, England was only awarded 1 other vote out of 21. There was an agenda there by the voting committee.

RSA's successful World Cup this summer made it possible for FIFA to take a gamble on nontraditional choices this time around. If there had been big problems, the reliable choices of the USA and England would have provided stability. Who knows what Brazil will bring in '14.

"Quatar" and "Katar" were both trending on twitter worldwide. Qatar nowhere to be found. in the trending topics.

Its still not certain that Brazil will pull everything together for '14 with the US being the fall back option for that one. I imagine they will as they will be given every chance to do so, but they reportedly have a very long ways with probably 2 years to do so.
