@GrantWahl Choosing Qatar and Russia is the biggest indictment possible that FIFA is not a clean organization. Petrodollars talk.

While this was my prediction, I can't help but be in shock. I expected it, but was still stunned to hear the word "Qatar" (and "Russia" for that matter, but less so). FIFA has dispensed with any attempt to outwardly appear incorruptible. What a disgrace. Qatar has the potential to be an utter nightmare -- it could work well, sure, but it could also be a disaster of epic porportions.

Really hope the Qatar situation crashes and burns in the next 12 years.

The 12 years thing is kind of unprecedented, right? Is it likely that they decided to do it this way because they knew they were going to Qatar and wanted to give them more time to build? What a waste to build all those stadia in a country with nobody to fill them.

Apparently, they're designing portable stadiums. You can disassemble and ship them wherever for sale or rent. They anticipate scenarios like a Brazil v Argentina friendly in Shanghai in the stadium that hosted the 22 Cup Final.

Qatar's national team has never qualified for the World Cup. They did make the second round of qualifying a couple times, though.

They haven't posted a win in the Asian Cup since 1986, and have only advanced out of that group stage once.

This is the equivalent of Haiti hosting the World Cup, if Haiti was full of oil.

So to sum this up, USSF and the FMF agreed to go along with some cocked up WCQ format so that Caribbean banana republics can get money in exchange for Warner's support, and then we crap out and, despite having the indisputed strongest technical bid of any country bidding on either cup, we get shut out.

Great year, Sunil/Chuck

Average July high in Doha: 107. Wonderful.

Qatar was the world possible choice technically of any of the bids for either year. Sure, a middle-eastern World Cup might be neat, but there are about 10 middle-eastern countries that would've been a better choice than Qatar, even considering the current political climates out there.

If Australia had won, it would have been fine.

Can we replace Sunil now!

Someone photoshop Xavi holding a barrel of oil instead of the Jules Rimet trophy.

In honor of Qatar's anti-alcohol beliefs, all future FIFA celebrations will look like this instead of using Champagne.
