I think initially he was offsides on the run, but pulled up back into an onsides position before Giroud made the pass so it was good.

This is correct. They have an easy path to the quarters (playing either Bosnia, Iran or Nigeria in the R16) but not the semis.

I'd consider having to play one good team to get to the semis an easy path. Not that Germany looks very beatable thus fa.

More optimal to win the group maybe? Ill take the scenario where a USA draw knocks out Ghana and leaves Portugal on life support (would need a win, USA loss, and make up a 5 goal deficit over USA).
