If Michael Bradley ends up at 70% Gattuso I'd call that a win, but you still need an attacking central mid.

Wouldn't that be Clint once Altidore is established as a target player?

I envision this as my lineup:

Altidore

Demspey

Beasley Adu Donovan

Bradley

Dolo DeMerit Gooch Pearce

Szetela, Feilhaber, Clark and Edu would be the 2nd team mids. Ching and Ferrari would be my 2nd string strikers (although you could slot Donovan or Adu up to the withdrawn spot). Bornstein, Bocanegra, Conrad, Simek and Spector would be the backup defenders.

How about an eventual 4-3-2-1 in a couple of years? i won't bother to name the defense now, but a midfield/attack of

LD Bradley/Edu/Clark Beasley

Deuce Adu

Altidore

Too much pressure on LD to play defense? Also, no Feilhaber.

I'm just thinking off hte top of my head, here.

I like it as well.

You said something prior to the World Cup last year along the lines of making sure your best XI are on the field, regardless of spot. Any lineup configuration has to have some combo of Deuce/Jozy/DMB/LD/Adu in it. We need more attacking firepower if we're ever going to move beyond a mid level WC team.

Deuce is making it so Landon had better start worrying about defense a little more because it's becoming his team in the eyes of nearly all US fans.

Agreed. Donovan needs to raise his game. He can keep taking PK's to pad his stats all he wants, but until he steps up against someone other than Mexico, he'll be a second fiddle to not only Deuce, but Jozy, Adu and whomever else emerges this cycle.

He really, really needs to go to Europe. Could you imagine if he reached 80% of his ceiling?

It occured to me during that game (as I'm sure it occured to every US Soccer fan with a brain) that the difference in mentalities between Clint and LD, not to mention Clint now and Clint with the Revs is astounding.

If Landon could develop a little European edge and swagger playing against and with world class players, we could be extremely dangerous in 09 and 10.

I'm not holding my breath.

From du Nord: http://dunord.blogspot.com/

US Soccer has appealed to the Spanish Football Federation to rescind their cancellation of the USA match v Catalonia in Barcelona on Oct 14. The USA is also looking for a replacement match if necessary.

Kevin Reynolds, folk hero to millions.

A 'fighting drunk' today admitted punching Sir Alex Ferguson in the groin and head butting a police community support officer.

Forty-three-year-old Kevin Reynolds pleaded guilty to assaulting the Manchester United manager outside a train station before attacking the officer and racially abusing him.

In Euro 2008 news today, England won against Russia to put them in 2nd in their group.

Meanwhile Scotland won 1-0 at France to put themselves a top of their group, meaning that France and Italy could be fighting for the last qualifying spot.

Qualifing is so tough in this. Looking at who might miss:

Portugal needs a win

France on the outside right now, Ukranie is already out.

Turkey or Norway with Turkey needing a win in their next game to gain the advantage.

Russia

Denmark are pretty much done.

I know it's womens soccer but...

Abby Wambach just had a very nice goal for the US against Sweden. She had a great chest trap off a cross and hit a nice half-volley past the goalie to give the US a 2-0 lead.

Ok, so Luis Felipe Scolari slapped someone on the sideline after Portugal's most recent Euro qualifier (I had FSC on mute, so I didn't catch all the details), but it seems like the federation is all pissy about it.

If they are stupid enough to fire him, the USSF should be all over it like no one's business. He's a really good coach.

There's a lot of people on the sideline at most big soccer games that need a good slapping.

I would agree on Big Phil. hell of a coach, plus he looks like Gene Hackman.

Has anybody here ever seen the show "American Soccer" on GOLTV?

Are they completely [expletive] and out of the loop or what? That was the lamest show I've ever seen. They were talking about Guisseppi Rossi like the only reason he wasn't playing for the US was because Arena didn't reach out to him and the Bradley should "recruit" him.

There are a lot of people in the US soccer community that are ill informed. You'd think it wouldn't be the case, really.

Yeah, because of the underground nature of soccer coverage in the US, fans and analysts are usually pretty informed.

Here are some topics they touched on:

Oguchi Onyewu might not be the player everyone thought he could be.

Rossi is really talented and from the US but not playing for them.

Bradley and Onyewu sometimes are too physical.

Did you know this Bradley kid is the coach's son?!

Landon Donovan isn't the most clutch player ever.

They were discussing all this like it was breaking news.

Wow. Was it like two 14 year old AYSO players hosting?

There's no reason that Rossi couldn't come back and play for the US team. He probably won't, but there's a very, very, very slight chance he will. Frankly, I'd offer him a bunch of money right now along with a guarantee that he's on the first team. Again, I don't think it'll matter.

Not that I want to dwell on it because it would be getting my hopes up for no reason, but who would get benched once Altidore got called up permanently?

We would be very stacked, that's for sure.
