Varitek went on the DL and to make room on the 40-man roster for Ken Huckaby, the Sox designated Hee Seop. Choi was hitting .207/.347/.718 in 227 AB at AAA-Pawtucket.

If you are the Cubs, do you take a flier on him ? You have Mabry and Nevin to play the balance of the year at 1st. Nevin will likely depart in a waiver deal. No 1st baseman above A ball is currently on the Cub 40-man roster. It would be tragic to see Mabry play out the string there.

I dunno. He's probably just not good enough to be a major leaguer, even though I love him.

Edit: Is that .718 his slugging, or his OPS? It can't be his slugging.

OPS.

I believe he was just ready to come off the DL (he was on it for about 1 month) at Pawtucket before he was designated.

I'd take a flier on Choi. He can't be worse then Mabry or Nevin. And he is a better defensive player then both.

we already ruined him, it'd just be mean to make him come back.

We ruined him? Does anyone have to take responsibility for their own career after leaving the Cubs?

I wouldn't mind having Choi back (to play where I have no idea), but his slugging is pretty poor for a 1B.

Will always have fond memories of the big fella. Was in attendance that game against the Yankees where he was carted off the field. Scary moment.

That being said I don't think the Cubs "ruined" him. If so, so did FLA, LA, and Boston.

I think if he had any kind of value left Boston wouldn't have DFA'ed him.

He could always go back to Korea/Japan and play.

For what it's worth, Boston sports radio was talking about him the other day and a couple of the guys who follow the minor league system for Boston said that Choi's work ethic and attitude in general has really been a disappointment to the Red Sox. They say he acts like he doesn't even want to be playing baseball.

I liked him too, but I wouldn't waste a spot for him.

I was at that game too. Kerry and a few other Cubs were visibly shaken up by that; I'll never forget their body language as they stood over him. Choi was absolutely out cold, didn't move a muscle -- one of the scariest things I've ever seen at a baseball game. In a way that play was a turning point in his career.

That said, I'd probably take a flyer on him too -- even if just for nostalgic reasons. I can still hear Wrigley chanting "Hee! Seop! Choi! Hee! Seop! Choi!"

I'm pretty sure you were one of the people on here pointing out how stupid we were for trading him while he put up his 270/.388/.495 line for Florida. Musta been a delayed ruination.

Cubs get Hee sop Choi

Red Sox get Henry Blanco

Cubs promote Soto to back up Barrett and save some money.

Cubs then DFA Mabry and call up Hoffpaur

I'm a big Choi fan, but I just dont think having a guy that can't make contact and can only play first base will work well on this roster.

Granted, he's probably a better option than Mabry, but what's the point.

It's no doubt Boston needs a catcher on the news that Tek has a torn meniscus in his knee and will need surgery. That's usually a 6 week limitation to starting physical activity. Blanco is a nice idea given need for a good signal caller and defender.

Well LA is probably what ruined the guys career. When he played, he produced. When he produced, he'd be benched the next day and be sent out to pinch hit 10 games later.

I liked Choi ALOT when he was younger but LA really ruined the guys image around the league. I have no doubt if he stayed a Marlin he could have been a very good ML 1B.

Hoffpauir is hitting around .250 at AAA after his hot start...he's really been struggling. I wouldn't call him up.

The Cubs would have to put Blanco on waivers, and he would probably get claimed before he reached Boston's turn.

the foulball off of Lowell's foot last night looked nasty and Veritek on the DL. seems to me a good fit for them is Nevin. 1B, 3B, emergency C.

with his big contract Nevin would probalby pass through waivers. I don't want Choi back (not that I don't have a soft spot for him), but this seems like an opportunity to swing a trade to dump a player that should have been dumped last week.
