What position does he play? It just says INF on the dodgers site. third? second? short?

LaRoche? Third.

Young? Second/outfield.

Any more info on Young defensively? How good he is at 2B, could he handle CF, etc.?

Good arm, bad hands and footwork. Probably won't stick at 2B.

He's mostly been playing RF from what I've seen (especially after Kemp returned to the minors), not sure if he can handle CF. That's why I'd prefer LaRoche, but that's overpaying for Maddux, imo.

Did anyone sense a PR nightmare before the national media started talking about a PR nightmare?
If Maddux had spent his entire career as a Cub, then it would have been a PR nightmare. Since he spent most of his best years with the Braves, however, I don't think it would be. I think the PR nightmare is a media invention.

Maybe we can send a prospect to LA to get LaRoche if we think we're trading Ramirez. Given the Dodgers love for guys with big arms the Cubs could surely put something together.

come to think of it though, it kind of plays into Hendry's hands...

"I have a HOF Chicago idol on my hands Ned. you were here. you know how these fans are. I need to take something back to the papers, and I know you're loaded. SD is offering that catcher Vance the Cubs Fan likes so much and Barfield for Mad dog and Walker. I need a big stick in the corner outfield. I know you can do this Ned. let's get it done."

No new deal: General manager Ned Colletti briefed the media on the trade that he had not yet made.

"I don't know if we have anything close," he said. "We've been on a lot of players the last 36 hours, and there's one deal that's probably got some life to it yet and a second deal with a touch of life. The other two or three are probably by the boards."

Colletti would not mention names of players or teams, but his history with Greg Maddux still has the future Hall of Famer a likely target before Monday's trade deadline. Colletti also remains keen on adding a hitter as well, especially with Garciaparra joining Jeff Kent on the sidelines for another 10 days or more. Bobby Abreu, another possibility, was traded to the Yankees on Sunday.

Colletti said he is not actively trying to trade Cesar Izturis, who was in the lineup for the first time at second base to make room for Betemit. The more injuries his infielders suffer, Colletti indicated, the more valuable Izturis is to the Dodgers. An acquisition of another infielder, however -- such as Miguel Tejada -- would most likely require a trade of Izturis. Top young players Russell Martin, Matt Kemp, Chad Billingsley and Andre Ethier are believed to be untouchable at this point.

With Nomar being hurt, Nevin or Walker could helpen sweeten the pot on a Maddux trade.

Sweet, that article didn't mention LaRoche, not that it means anything though.

But it also mentioned maddux. So that means OUR trade might be one of the "likely" ones. This is very good.

If there is a way to get LaRoche in a deal for Maddux, do it, whatever it takes. But I just doubt the Dodgers are going to do that. If they do do that, then the Cubs must strongly consider trading Aramis to the Angels.

Ken Rosenthal / Fox Sports"] Astros third baseman Morgan Ensberg remains the Padres' primary trade target, but Cubs right-hander Greg Maddux could represent Plan B, FOXSports.com has learned.

The Padres' plans hinge on two unrelated scenarios — the prognosis for right-hander Chan Ho Park, who went on the disabled list Sunday, and the Astros' pursuit of Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada.

Ensberg, currently on the DL with a bruised right shoulder, is part of the Astros' offer for Tejada, according to major-league sources.

The Astros, however, are unlikely to trade Ensberg in a lesser deal. They were not enthused by the Padres' initial offer of right-handed reliever Scott Linebrink and either infielder Mark Bellhorn or Geoff Blum — and probably would want a more substantial regular, such as Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, in return. ...

Park, suffering from abdominal pain, went on the DL retroactive to July 26. The Padres could intensify their efforts to acquire Maddux if they believe Park's injury is serious, but their primary goal is to add a third baseman, not a starting pitcher.

Dave van Dyck / The Trib"]

Maddux was still a Cub on Sunday evening and indications were it would remain that way, even through Monday's 3 p.m. non-waiver trading deadline, with sources saying the Cubs would have to be blown away by an offer to do anything now.

Maddux has indicated he would like to pitch for another year, has said he loves Wrigley Field, and the Cubs might want to employ him in some capacity after his playing days.

So far, no contender has offered a package suitable to general manager Jim Hendry. Maddux is owed more than $3 million for the rest of this season and it is believed the Cubs would be willing to pay most of that if they could get a top-flight prospect in return.

It appears the most interested teams have been the Dodgers and Padres, with the Giants also in the picture. All those cities are near Maddux's Las Vegas home, which would make them acceptable to him. But the Dodgers have fallen five games behind the first-place Padres in the NL West and may want to hold on to their top prospects.

not a home park condusive to success for Maddux, but with all the prospects the D-Backs have, I wish Hendry would try to get them in the Maddux mix too.

I wonder if the next column will say: Cubs extend Maddux for 1 more season at $5M.

This quote made me happy:

One name that continues to be linked to the Giants is Greg Maddux, although his acquisition remains a longshot. Cubs GM Jim Hendry reportedly wants a significant booty of prospects for Maddux. If the Giants' seven-game losing streak has not dissuaded Sabean from making a run for the NL West, it reportedly has made him think twice about parting with good prospects now, when they might be needed to fetch players during this winter's rebuilding.

Hendry wants booty!!!

With the rumored bad blood between Dodgers GM, and former Cubs front office man, Ned Colletti and the Cubs, something tells me that the report from ESPN...

A baseball executive told ESPN The Magazine's Amy Nelson that the Dodgers are the hottest team on Greg Maddux, and that the Cubs and Dodgers are haggling over prospects. The deal would be two L.A. prospects for Maddux; one would be a position player, the other a pitcher. And both would be high-level, likely coming from their loaded Triple-A team in Las Vegas.

The executive also said that the Padres and Braves had inquired, but neither team is believed to have made an official offer.

...that cites an unnamed "baseball executive" is probably just a plant from someone in the Cubs front office trying to stir up a decent offer from one of the other NL West teams.

man, hendry is dreaming if he thinks he's going to get something good for a borderline 5th starter. it'd be just like the cubs to keep throwing maddux out there for the rest of the season for senimental reasons.

I really hope the Cubs just trade Maddux. If they get anything of any value in return, great. If they get some major league ready players, great. If they get average minor leaguers, great. Maddux serves very little purpose on this team for the remainder of the 2006 season and getting anything for him is beneficial for this organization.

I'm won't be shocked if Maddux is still with the team tomorrow night, if that happens, I fully expect him to be in a Cubs uniform for the 2007 season as well. Hendry has stated numerous times that he was caught off guard by the Prior injury last offseason and I don't see him heading into next year with a lack of starting pitching. Not that this particular pitching will be any good whatsoever (Maddux, Rusch, etc.), but the GM and manager should have their choice of the 5 man rotation from plenty of arms.

Posted
It's no better than a 50-50 proposition at this point that Maddux's next start will come in a different uniform than his last start. The Dodgers are interested, as much because GM Ned Colletti has known and loved Maddux all his career as because Colletti can definitively see Maddux as the difference between playing baseball in October and playing 18 holes a day in October. The Padres, on the other hand, might actually need Maddux to serve as a vital piece in a larger plan. They've been working on finding a third baseman. They would almost certainly deal Scott Linebrink or another pitcher to get that third baseman. Then Maddux could fill the pitching vacancy they create with that trade. So as of late Sunday night, the Padres seemed to be running slightly ahead of the Dodgers in the race for the only available 327-game winner on the Deadline-Mart shelves. But given Colletti's respect and affection for Maddux, that could change by 4 p.m. ET. And the Cubs still appear to view Maddux as a big enough attraction and clubhouse force that they're obviously not wild about dealing him at all. So it wouldn't shock us if he's the biggest name who goes no place Monday.

Greg Maddux is a borderline 5th starter?

I agree that it would be just like the Cubs to keep throwing him out there for sentimental reasons, at least the Cubs of old, but Maddux is better than a borderline 5th starter. He isn't as bad as we have seen him recently and he isn't as good as he was last time out or when he started the season 5-0. He is somwhere in between.

He'll probably win 12-15 games with an ERA somewhere between 4.00 and 4.50 and good WHIP. That's better than most 4th starters out there, isn't it?

Posted
According to Will Carroll, the Dodgers are the frontrunner for Maddux. Hendry is willing to take on some salary if a trade is made as long as he can get a "upside with questions hitter" like Guzman or Kemp.

He isn't as bad as we have seen him recently

why's that? just because you say it?

he's got a decent whip, but he's got a 4.70 era, and his era is well over 6 since april...that's fifth starter material.

Posted

also, i don't think we should be trying to get anything "good" for him. he has been decent for us...remember this team is 20 games under .500- he has the 2nd most wins. he has thrown decent, but on this team he was forced to be our #2 pitcher not 4 or 5.....with vasquez, buerhle and garcia sucking it up for the sox, i think they would love it if their #4 guy only had a 4.70 era.

if maddux goes to a picher friendly park like detroit,la, san diego or seattle he would thrive and probably win his 15 games. he will not be back..if we get a class A prospect for him, it is a plus. if we keep him, he either doesn't pitch(which isn't fair to him) or he takes starts away from hill, marmol, guzman or marshall (which is who should start every game that zambrano doesn't start-unless you are looking to deal prior in the offseason, then he needs to start also)

sorry but we won't get anything great for anyone unless we deal aram, or part of our bullpen. everything else will be a dump or to get anything for a player who isn't coming back! if hendry is waiting to deal walker, nevin, rusch, maddux, neifi for something good, he is much worse than i thought!
