The reason I'm in favor of trading Maddux is that arbitration for extra draft choices isn't an option at the end of the season. I think it's pretty obvious Hendry won't trade Maddux unless he makes out real well, since he doesn't want to trade an "icon" otherwise.

For this reason, I don't think Maddux will be traded, which is a shame. I feel his value to the Cubs youngsters for the next 2 months won't be as much as the players he could fetch in a trade.

Then the question becomes (and I'm scared to even type this) whether Hendry will re-sign him to a one-year deal in the off-season ... which wouldn't surprise me.

I really hope a deal can be reached.

I think if Maddux isn't traded, and he wants to pitch another year that Hendry would offer him a deal. Not saying it is right or wrong, but Greg has pretty much made it clear that he wants to play in Chicago.

That's the sense I get, too.

There'd be no reason to commit money to a 41 year old pitcher who's numbers indicate a steady decline.

again, I think people are talking past each other as all indications are the Cubs can't get anything of value in return (I don't view a mid-tier prospect of value)

let's make a list of what the pros are if what has been reported is true (the only trade will involve the Cubs picking up all or most of the remaining salary and fetch a mid-tier prospect) and considering who the manager is

pros if traded - mid tier prospect, opens up opportunities for young pitchers

pros if kept - avoids overuse of young pitchers, young pitchers probably won't be used anyway (Rusch will), goodwill/mentoring/blah blah blah

the scales don't tip heavily either way. I think they tip toward keeping him, others think they tip toward trading him. maybe we should agree to disagree since there is no clear cut answer to what is best.

I think we can all agree that their should be a ray of hope that Maddux's performance yesterday, his history of late in the year success, and playoff experience should and will fetch more than what has been reported.

I'm still not understanding the overworking of the young pitchers. The pitchers at risk of being overworked(Z, Marshall, Marmol) will get their starts if they are healthy regardless of whether Maddux is there or not. Hill and Guzman aren't on the brink of setting IP highs, and they're the ones taking Maddux's innings if he's traded.

just looking at the numbers at the cube.

Guzman

02 156

03 90

04 48

05 18

06 about 90 thus far, 10 more starts at 6 inning puts him at 150, 60 more than he has pitched in 5 years, on an oft injured arm

Ryu - didn't realize he had such a significant workload last year.

Marshall

03 166

04 79

05 104

06 103 already. 10 more starts at 6 inning puts him at 160, 60 more than he has pitched in 3 years, on an oft injured arm

Marmol - I didn't realize his work load was so significant the past two years either.

not as bad as I thought with two of the four (Hill I'm ok with giving lots of innings to), but I still think it should be a consideration and that Marshall and Guz shouldn't get more than a 6 or so more starts.

For what it's worth ...

MLB4U rumors[/url]"]

The Cubs were seeking Andre Ethier from the Dodgers making a deal sending to Maddux to LA very unlikely though Scott Miller reports that talks are ongoing. ESPN the Mag's Amy Nelson reported Sunday that the Cubs and Dodgers are now arguing over prospects. The Dodgers and Cubs appear willing to agree that a AAA pitcher and a AAA position prospect go to the Cubs. The Cubs will likely pick most of Maddux's remaining $3M salary knowing that they will get more in return and save a PR nightmare.

That's...interesting. If true, more than they;ve been rumored to be getting.

Did anyone sense a PR nightmare before the national media started talking about a PR nightmare?

I never got any sense of that until this weekend. not from this board, local media, nowhere. I think the fanbase kind of saw it coming all along and was pretty realistic about not getting a ton. I for one nearly pee'd my pants first I heard Ethier's name mentioned.

I doubt we'll ge Ethier. I really doubt we'll get anyone. But as a fan I don't sense a PR nightmare at all. Not with Greg coming out and saying he loves the cubs, loves the fans, but if it helps the cubs, he will be ok with being traded.

I don't know how it could be a PR nightmare when the player himself says he wants to help the cubs in any way he can. If anything it will just be somber, all cubs fans will just be sad to part ways. But I think most people will understand it's for the best.

I wouldn't mind Kemp either, though I'd bet on it it being Delwyn Young. Maddux's value simply isn't high.

Young wouldn't be a bad pickup.

Best case scenario: Maddux for LaRoche and then make the rumored Ramirez deal.

do you think LaRoche would be ready to step into a starting role next year?

I'd imagine so, he's continuing his great play at AAA after being promoted.

If we can get a top prospect like LaRoche, why not just pay Maddux's entire contract. Shouldn't be that big of a deal, and Hendry was saying how he had plenty of room to go out and make a deal. I just can't imagine getting a guy like LaRoche.

The Cubs getting a AAA pitcher and a AAA hitter for Maddux from LA?

LaRoche and Miller plz.

Kemp > LaRoche (I'm in Dream Land).

I agree with kctigers, it's probably Young. LaRoche would make sense for the reason TT said, you can make the Aramis trade and just get the best prospect/player combo and not worry about McPherson.

Does anyone else find this exciting? Even if it doesn't happen. We're hearing about getting some pretty damn decent guys for Maddux and Ramirez. :D
