"He just got here," Baker said. "We still have to win ballgames. Everybody says 'Mix in the young guys.' I have a bunch of young guys in already."

i don't know which is better...the 'he just got here' line or basically saying that playing theriot will cause the team to lose.

the 'he just got here' line makes it seem like he needs a few days off to unpack his suitcase, get his haircut, get used to his new pants, etc. so that's pretty good. but then you have the 'we still have to win' crap, which is so idiotic it's comical because a) the cubs won today (despite theriot's efforts to sabotage the win with his stupid double and triple) and b) the cubs haven't exactly been piling up the wins by playing the non-kids.

I don't get the why we still have to win ballgames line...it sounds like hes saying theriot can't help them win ballgames which then raises the questions why would you even bring the guy up? Does Dusty ever think about what hes saying?

If Dusty wants to get resigned wouldn't he be better off playing the young guys so that he sands a message that he is in this for the long-run and will do whatever is needed to win a WS. You aren't going to get closer to winning a WS by playing old, bad players. The Cubs gotta see what they have so they know who to get.

everyone is disagreeing with the conotations of his statements, ie. that playing Theriot means losing.

I disagree with the statement on its face. no, you don't have to keep on winning games. you need to do what you can to ensure the team is better next year, which means giving kids experience and keeping everyone healthy.

follow up question to Baker if he uses the preserve the pennant race card - "so that means if your best chance to win a ballgame is extending Z to 135 pitches in a game, you'd do it right?" or "if that means using Howry 5 or 6 days in a row, you do it right?" that excuse is a pre-textual load of crap.

So Dusty has COMPLETELY forgotten about the two weeks he spent up here in May????

Not surprising considering he gave him FOUR at-bats in that time! Unbelievable.

One thing I can tell you guys about Ryan Theriot - the dude came to Chicago ready to play ball. If Dusty gives that guy a chance, the very least he will see is a ballplayer who is going to get dirty and never help the pitcher out.

He may not have power, but he is not going to be an easy out. Just a prediction....

Double and a triple. That's enough power for me from Theriot.

As much as I'd like Theriot to play, if Neifi had hit that ball, the triple would be called what it actually was-a routine fly ball that the right fielder lost in the sun. Let's give him credit where credit is due-he played a very good game, with a double and a stolen base, and that's certainly good enough for me.

Don't forget the BB. One thing I like about his approach is that he was making the pitcher work. Nice to see from the #2 hitter.

The "getting the feet wet" is somewhat common especially when the player is pretty much unfamiliar.

This is true of better players at lower levels.

When Bobby Cox recieves a callup, assuming the player didn't have to travel overnight, he will start that day. His philosophy is that the best way to get over the anxiety is to get him 4 or 5 ab's asap. That way, you aren't forced to send a guy up there in late/extra innings in a critical situation because you have no one else on the bench. My favorite case was Franceour striking out his first 3 ab's and then hitting the game-winning HR in the 8th inning of his first ML game last year.

It's probably because Theriot took a walk and saw 26 pitches in his 5 pa. There's no place for that on dusty's club.

I'm surprised Dusty didn't start hyperventalating during Theriot's 9 pitch ab and Murton's 8 pitch ab.

It has already been noted time and time again that Dusty is NO Bobby Cox. Cox's quote on Kelly Johnson last year if juxtaposed against this one by Dutsy would be all the proof we would need.

I saw that game and Francour was stuck in the 4 hole to boot.

I personally thought it was a great managerial move when I saw it. Not only are you getting the butterflies out of the way but you are also giving the kid a big pat on the back.

Here you go tiger, go get em. I dont think I could ever see Dusty saying that to any of the kids.

Thanks to Dusty Theriot played well on Saturday. I look forward to his next start for the Twins in 2007. Can't Theriot play SS too? Why does Baker always find a way to put Perez in?

I'd imagine from Dusty it'd be more like "go get em, swing that bat, but don't mess up in the field. if you do, it's because you're still young and i've got neifi to show you the ropes. in fact, you can just watch him. he's a ball player."

Oh yeah...and don't blow it.

I'd love to see Cedeno and Theriot start for the rest of the year. Let's see what they can do for next year and then Hendry can make a sound decision.

the only reason Theriot did well was because Dusty put him in a favorable matchup dude. You gotta build up his confidence man! You can't expect a young guy to play back to back games.

I'll bet Dusty wishes he had Theriot at second against the Mets in the "Great Debacle". Oh course in Dustys mind he probably would have put Perez there instead.
