Rusch is expected to be activated from the disabled list on Monday.

At least that means Guzman will actually get to pitch, even though it will be in AAA.

"The people who may not factor in next year and may be able to help a club in a pennant race certainly could be available."

That list should include Pierre, Williamson, Maddux, Blanco, Nevin, and Mabry.

The Cubs also may hold onto Juan Pierre unless they're overwhelmed by offers, preferring to receive a draft pick if he leaves via free agency.

Wow. So, if Pierre continues his retched season, Hendry is gonna offer him arbritration in hopes of getting a draft pick? What happens when he accepts and gets $9M/year?

That's the silver lining. I don't want to see Rusch anywhere near the starting rotation, however. Let him replace Guzman as the reliever who goes two weeks without pitching.

That's an awful gamble to take. Keep Walker and offer him arbitration instead.

More and more I am fully convinced that Juan Pierre will eventually be re-signed. Lets face it, he is bound to hit better than he has (as he has shown of late) and by the end of it, he'll probably settle into a .280/.330 (BA/OBP) line.

That will be good enough for Jim Hendry (with shades of Lance Johnson gallivanting before his eyes) to sign Juan Pierre to a minimum 3 year contract. Never will Hendry want to admit a mistake, and if JP gives him even the slightest incentive, he'll have Juan Frenchy re-signed to a deal quicker than you can say Jack Robinson.

Jim Hendry is a moron. This buffoonery is only going to keep setting us back. This comedy of errors is a trainwreck.

Hendry could be stuck with underachieving Glendon Rusch and Neifi Perez because of their multiyear contracts and his refusal to eat those contracts.

DANG IT JIM! JUST GIVE THEM THEIR DOUGH AND TELL THEM TO PACK THEIR BAGS!

Do people actually read before spinning out of control? Hendry didn't say he was offering arbitration to Pierre. A poster here made that leap, and others ran with it. It's not possible Hendry expects Pierre, in a weak FA class for CF, to get signed before arbitration time?

I don't understand why there is no middle ground on this board. It's always extreme or bust. Hendry is right - the team doesn't need to be blown up.

Half the position players should and will stay. Barret, Lee, Ramirez, Cedeno, and Jones are all Cubs next year. That's a solid core. LF, CF, and 2B are the changes needed. Those are tweaks, not bombs.

Most of the pitching the stays. Zambrano, Marshall, (one other kid from the 5 to choose from), Howry, Eyre, Dempster all return. Likely Prior as well, though he could be moved. But that leaves 2 starters and a couple of bullpen slots. Tweaks, not hand grenades.

I don't understand why Hendry is getting railed here. He is correct.

What this team needs is another very good starter and a stud in the OF.

Seconded.

Despite his recent struggles, Dempster is the closer.

A stud outfield bat, or stud 2B bat, a stud starter and this team can compete in 2007 if the organization shifts offensive philosophy. Prior must continue to improve and one of Marshall/Marmol can be a decent 4/5 starter.

The offensive philisophy isn't going to change though. You know that.

Have you looked at the stats of this year's Cubs team?

Another year of tweaking might make this team mediocre... if everything goes right.

Do I need to? How about I just look at the stats of the core team I listed? What do you know, those look pretty good, outside of a slumping Ramirez and Dempster's recent struggles.

Offering Pierre arbitration makes sense. Even if he does accept and gets 9 million that would be for a 1 year deal. That's a lot better than giving him a 3 year deal. It makes him an expensive bridge to Pie but it also makes him a decent trading chip at next year's deadline. All that assumes that there isn't a GM dumb enough to give Pierre a multi year deal- which is a pretty big assumption.

The only player I really would like the see the Cubs get rid of is Kerry Wood. I like Kerry but the guy just can not be relied upon any longer. Or at least not with the trainers or whomever we got trying to rehabilitate him. If they keep Aramis, Prior, and some others that is fine with me. But please get rid of Kerry Wood unless they want to try him out in the pen but I doubt he would succeed there.

Ramirez and Dempster you agreed were struggling.

That's 8 out of 25 spots; in other words, 17 out of 25 need to be "tweaked." That's a heck of a tweaking...
