This happens every year, what's the surprise? There is a lot of overreacting in this thread.

I think we, as the fans of this organization, have earned the right to overreact by watching this team everyday in the hopes of a meaningless victory.

Oh - and Z has been one of the constants, not getting hurt. This does not happen everyyear, but it could be "his year"

Yes, actually it does happen every year. Heavy arm is common and Zambrano has experienced as much in the past seasons as well.

You have absolutely no more of a claim to the statement that "it's nothing, happens every year" than others have to the claim that "it's something".

Maybe it doesn't have to happen every year if Dusty had an ounce of common sense in dealing with his pitchers.

I don't think theDude was making the comment based on his own opinion, rather he was simply reiterating Z's quote.

Personally, for now, I'll think I'll side with Z on this one.

Apparently it disappeared just like the Cubs offense.

I think he was referring to the font size.

Ah. Then apparently someone is drunk, just like the Cubs front office.

please fire this idiot.

“I’m sure the workload … it obviously would have an effect,” Rothschild said. “I don’t know that there’s any way around it."

nope. there is absolutely no way around it. mlb rules strictly prohibit you from taking a pitcher out until he reaches 110 pitches. and twice a month a pitcher, by rule, has to throw 120+.

how does anyone in this organization still have a job?

That sounds a lot like a bail out comment by Rothschild. Almost like he disagrees with how Dusty uses the staff but does't want to overtly criticize, so instead he claims there is nothing that he can do about it. Remember that Larry is not Dusty's guy...

This excerpt from Miles' column really frosts my apples:

The Cubs are a game out of last place in the National League Central, and with the tough Detroit Tigers coming to town today, it’ll be difficult for this team to convince anybody but itself that this season isn’t over.

No, I always believe it,” manager Dusty Baker said of his team still being in the race. “No, it ain’t going to be tough to sell.”

Who's he crappin'? Fine if he and Hendry and MacPhail want to delude themselves with all that rah-rah BS and using the 2005 Astros as a spurious benchmark, but to then think the fans will buy into it speaks to the low opinion they have towards those Who Never Played The Game.

The loathing they have for fans who desire more than just the Wrigley Experience is reprehensible. As is their refusal to think in the long-term when it comes to constructing a championship-caliber ballclub.

Pitching coach Larry Rothschild insisted Zambrano’s “heavy arm” was nothing serious, but it is worth noting that Zambrano has reached triple-digit pitch counts in each of his 15 starts, and he was coming off back-to-back starts in which he threw 126 pitches each time.

Fantastic.

Can anyone tell me just what does Larry Rothschild do? I've yet to see, hear or read anything to suggest he's at any odds with Dusty. If he did, he had two times to leave and decided to stay. In fact, a part of me thinks that Dusty doesn't do anything with the pitchers. Baker gets no free pass at all, but it sure would help if our pitching coach showed anything to suggest that he has disputes with Baker regarding the pitching staff.

Regarding Z, could pitching in the WBC and having to get ready earlier have had an effect?

I think the WBC affected his early season, and the overextended starts are affecting him now.

Why are these guys so stubburn? Are they just stubburn, ignorant or in denial? They just simply do not have a clue on how to run and manage a baseball team.

They aren't willing to think about the idea that their way might not be the right way.

Well it seems the Trib/MacPhail don't either. How are those Bears of yours looking gooney? They can't be as near as frustrating as this team is.

zambrano throws 120 pitches a game. maddux throws like 62. i don't know what else to say

Dusty is eager to ruin Zambrano the way he has ruined Prior and Wood.

Hmmm...baseball signs an agreement with the MLBA and then 7 years later the Anti-Cub comes out of hiding and destroys the Cubs as we know them. It all makes sense now.

Wood was hurt quite frequently before Baker even got to Chicago.

The thing I hate with pitch counts as it relates to Wood, Prior and Zambrano, it frustrates me to see how easy it is for them to get guys down 0-2 or 1-2, but they need seven or eight more pitches to retire them.

Wood was looking perfectly healthy when Dusty arrived.

I believe he was on the disabled list every year prior to 2003. Baker definitely hasn't helped him, but I remember saying in 2002 that I didn't think Wood would ever be healthy enough to last an entire season.

In 2002 he started 33 games for 213 innings with a 3.66 ERA.

2000 was his first year back from TJS, when it was absurd to expect much from him. 2001 he started 28 games for 174 IP with a 3.36 ERA, an excellent 2nd season after TJS performance. He was fine at the start of 2003, and in fact had a career year. But Dusty extended him to ridiculous amounts, ignoring his past health scares, throwing him 140+ pitches in games.

Dusty got a healthy Wood, Prior and Zambrano when he showed up at the door. 2 are down.
