if kerry has any loyalty to the cubs and a conscious (he's been paid a ton w/ very little in return), he'll pitch out of the pen the remainder of the season and agree to an incentive laden 1 year deal, w/ a base of $3 million where he can make up to $8 million.

it may not be a bad option. those 3 year offers may start drying up.

turn him into smoltz/eckersley/gagne. just don't let him get a hold of the whatever substance gagne took.

Honestly, if we are ignoring everything else and just look at what would be "fair" to the Cubs, he should get the same deal Grissom got this year if he resigns with us.

First of all, the only people who have any loyalty to a brand (or, in this case, team) are their customers (or, in this case, fans). Kerry is like any other worker - he'll be there for the company when and if it's in his best interests, and vice versa.

I predict that Wood gets a two-year deal from a team with a healthy payroll next year - provided the option doesn't get exercised. He can spend year one rehabbing to his arm's content (provided he's not physically done), and build up for a hunky three-year-contract in year number two.

well, i assume he'll look decent out of the pen when he returns. hence the $3 million base..

i have a feeling you'll be right. if he goes to an NL team, I hope Cubs fans litter him w/ boos when he return to wrigley and shuts the cubs out.

A minor league deal wouldn't be fair.

I missed Rothschild on the pregame, but have their plans for Wood been discussed at all? Are they shutting him down or will he be pitching when he can? If Wood can't go every 5th day right now he can't be on the team, but that doesn't mean he can't pitch. It'll take longer than they would've liked for him to work through this, but I don't think he reinjured anything.

And Wood out of the bullpen wouldn't really do any good for anyone. The Cubs don't have a need for that and it wouldn't help Wood's career.

Don't forget that Wood went on the DL for the exact same thing as last year and even with surgery he is having the exact same problems. 10GS last year 4GS this year. Wood is done for, and is back where he belongs, the DL.

seriously, bring him back as a reliever when he returns. get something for this bum in a trade. he looked good out of the pen last year. perhaps his arm only has 30-40 pitches per outing left in it.

Last year in the pen he was still pitching 97-98 MPH. This year he's been at around 90-91. That's not going to cut it in the pen.

i thought he was throwing it 94-95 a few outings ago?? since he's starting, he may be trying to conserve himself. put him in the pen and he can air it out for an inning.

Come on man, it's time to admit that Wood is done.

Cubs are not contenders, so Kerry in the bullpen would be pointless. Better to take that bag of balls offer and send Kerry on his way.

I don't really care to be honest.

The rotation should be the following for the rest of the year ...

Z

Maddux

Marshall

Prior

Marmol/Hill/Guzman

Deal Maddux at the deadline and add Hill or Guz to the rotation. Pick which one you want to develop and KEEP him there for the rest of the season. If Marmol proves to be a bust or pitches better out of the bullpen, add the other one.

Next year, we should have at least 3 young arms in Z, Prior, and Marshall. If even one of the three of Marmol, Guz, or Hill works out, then the rotation is almost set.

If we are going to go with young arms next year I for one hope we sign Maddux again for next year. I think he keeps the kids stable.

maddux is about done. deal him off to a contender for a prospect and let him finish out his great career in a pennant chase.

i proposed maddux, williamson & hill for joel guzman in the transaction forum.

Agreed, Maddux is done for too and if we sign him to a 1 year deal I will be dissapointed.

What has Wood done that he deserves to be booed?

Yeah, the plan isn't even to shut him down:

Cubs.com"]"I'm not injured, I didn't hurt anything," Wood said Friday. "I think it's something that comes along with shoulder surgery. I've had a tough time recovering and getting this thing ready to go every fifth, sixth or seventh day sometimes. We'll take the time to get it right now and get back before the All-Star break and finish the season healthy."

...............

"He threw today and he was very encouraged with the way he felt today," Cubs athletic trainer Mark O'Neal said. "Right now, we're going into each start with question marks. We want to get a definite idea of how he's going to feel. We're going to backdate it and try to throw a couple pens, and get a significant throw between now and the end of the 15 days, and hopefully get him back."

................

"It's jeopardizing our bullpen for me to go out and try to battle through this," Wood said. "We can't have what I did the last time out happen, especially two out of three days and the bullpen gets hammered. It's not helping the team. We'll take some time and get it right."

"We've just been going into his last two starts with too many question marks," O'Neal said, "and we need to solidify that."

................

Wood was examined this week by Dr. Tim Kremchek, who performed the surgery last August, and he assured the pitcher that the discomfort he's feeling is normal. When Wood played catch Friday, Wood said he felt great.

"We still need to come up with some definitive idea of how he's going to recover," O'Neal said.

"There are days when I've felt great and gone out and pitched and days when I didn't feel so great," Wood said. "It's been up and down and a little bit of a roller coaster. I'm having a down time now."

What has Wood done that he deserves to be booed?

Because Wood told the Cubs to put him on the DL just so he could collect money without pitching and hurt the value of the contract he'll receive this offseason.

That and he's intentionally trying to make his arm a little more sore after he starts just out of spite to Cubs fans.

Not that its completely mental, but it does have that kind of ring to it. Notice how the day after the Dr. reassured him he threw and felt great. Hmmmm, I hope he's back soon, I would really love to see a strong push from Woody.

It's not about him feeling worse. It's about him not being able to start every 5 days right now and throw enough innings each start. With the way it was going now, he's needed an extra day or two between starts and Dusty has had to make sure that he had long relief ready for when he did start. You can't do that with a big league team.

He just needs to work through the extra stiffness and get to the point where he can go every five days.

I wonder if Kerry will ever be able to go on a normal pitching rotation again.

I might have seen it coming, but the reality of this situation is really unfortunate from a sentimental standpoint. I love the guy, and the fact of the matter is, we're probably going to be better off trading him.

Carlos Marmol, your table is ready.

Jon you're an island of sanity amongst a sea of insane posts.

Wood has been the good solider all through this fiasco.

Last year his shoulder was hurt, but instad of going on the DL he trusted the Cubs and pitched in the bullpen, and he pitched THE DAY BEFORE HIS SURGERY.

This year he tries to come back and help a team mired in a miserable slump.

What a me player. What a whimp. He doesn't care about the Cubs. He only cares about his next contract.

Everyone should be fired. O'neil, Hendry, Backer, Rothschild, everyone of them.

Do you have any proof to back that up? One could just as easily say that Maddux keeps Wood and Prior injured - these shenanigans began in 2004, when the Cubs signed him, after all.

No, that's Rothschild who keeps getting our pitchers hurt. There was even talk on here the other day that Maddux thinks good ol' Larry is a joke.

Who cares? He's just Pattersoned himself. I don't care if he wins three Cy Youngs in a row with the Cardinals. It's time for him to go' date=' and it's too bad things played out this way. Now we see what happens with Prior this year and possibly cut the cord with him too.
Why does it seem like every year, we all talk about how we'll be better once we get rid of (fill in the blank) Sosa, Farnesworth, Patterson, Wood and now Prior?

I can't think of any other team that had so many key players crash and burn with the team.

right now the cubs are better off w/ guzman starting over wood.

hopefully they keep starting Guzman for the rest of the year. In fact keep starting Guzman and Hill in place of Wood and Rusch. We have to see what we have for enxt year and the future.

It's really sad that we have Rusch. It's even sadder if they keep starting him when one of our youngsters (Hill, Guzman, heck even Marmol) could be getting constant experience in the majors this year so we can see if they would be good to go with next year. Any good orginazation would realize this and see what our youngsters have for next year!
