From yesterday's Trib:

Mark, any chance the Sox could make a trade with the Cubs, who obviously have a lot of needs, for either Scott Eyre or Bobby Howry? I know they are both expensive, but they could really help out this bullpen. Thanks. --Matt, Chicago

Matt, you have a great mind. I was thinking about Howry as well. But he has a pretty healthy contract, and I believe the Cubs want to keep him unless they get the key to the Sox's farm system. The Sox were interested in Eyre as early as last July, but Eyre was able to get a three-year deal from the Cubs last winter that the Sox weren't willing to offer.

Who do you think the Cubs could realistically obtain from the Sox for Eyre and/or Howry?

NO!! No trades with them unless we get an arm or a leg.

Seriously dude, you're obsessed with the White Sox.

If we get a good deal we should take it no matter who the team is. Not to say either way about Eyre, but trading in general.

Yes I hate the Cardinals and White Sox. After the Garland-Karchner deal, I don't want to trade w/ them unless we get some good help for now AND the future. There are teams to dump players for nothing in return, but the White Sox and Cardinals are not among those teams

Who has ever, said anything, about "dumping players for nothing in return" to the White Sox.

I didn't. I'm saying if the White Sox want help from the North Side, they better help us out in any deal. I think the Boss would have such an attitude regarding trades with the Mets or Red Sox.

I think thats the goal in any trade....

Oh, and btw, before you get all pissed about Garland for Karchner....

I think thats fair payback for Bell for Sosa..

Yes, that's how trades work.

The Cubs couldn't complete the trade to acquire Brandon McCarthy and Brian Anderson due to "geographical restraints." These restraints were put in effect to end unfair trades between rivals.

And why, exactly, by that logic, would the White Sox not think the exact same thing?

We're allowed to charge more but they aren't?

You obviosly don't get it. Any trade with the White Sox or Cardinals, in my book needs to cost them a little more than other teams, since we hate their guts.

Correction, YOU hate their guts.

I'd trade with them in a heartbeat if it was a good trade. A good trade is a good trade is a good trade reguardless of who its with. (The exception to this rule being certain interdivision trades)

And if the deal turns out to be a Garland for Karchner deal, with the Cubs getting the short end of the stick, do you want to deal w/ moronic Sox fans shoving it down your throat??

Three words.

"Sosa for Bell"

And I cant say that i've ever had a problem with a sox fan "shoving a deal down my throat." Either you or the sox fans you deal with seem to be extreemly childish.

Frankly, I wouldn't care. I don't care about the White Sox. I never have. I don't root for them, I don't root against them. Why should I hate them? They are in the American League, not the National League. I'll save my enmity for teams that matter to the Cubs, and their chances of making a playoff game.

Oh, and that enmity extends to people, as well. Jim Hendry, for example.

Without Karchner, the Cubs don't make the playoffs in 98. Garland has had one season as a starter that would allow him to crack a healthy Cubs rotation. It was a bad trade, but it wasn't terrible.

I was going to say the exact same thing. Bell for Sosa trumps almost any trade in the history of baseball. Not every trade...cough Babe Ruth cough...but almost any.

Which is crazy, especially for the White Sox.

Agreed. The Cards I could see not wanting to trade with because they are in our divison. But we play the White Sox 6 times a year and don't have to compete with them for a playoff spot. I think the Boss would MUCH rather trade with the Mets than the Red Sox.

Look, I have no problems with the Cubs making a trade with the White Sox, but only if they get a very good young player in return. If it's Howry, I would want Josh Fields, or perhaps Jerry Owens. If it's Eyre, I would McCarthy. Don't like it, fine. But if the Cubs couldn't get one of those three players for Eyre or Howry, then forget it.

To be fair, its a little tougher when you actually live here in Chicago, but that said, I generally agree with what you wrote.
