They should've won today. Terrible pitching and bad fielding did them in. Hopefully the hitting streak keeps up for the rest of the road trip and they can move up a few more games.

Well, that was an overall bad game.....

bad outing for Maddux

Murton looked horrendous

0-5 today for Murton with 3 k's. Not a good day.

But dude, he was being aggressive. Can't fault kid for being aggressive.

 at Baker and Cline for setting back Murton's development because they wanted him to be "overly aggressive." Murton needs to develop "selective hearing" and go back to what he has done well. Go back and listen to what the coaches taught you at GTech, cause they are real coaches.

It could just be a slump. Even patient hitters have them. He'll find his plate discipline again.

normally the W/L record of a starting pitcher isnt that all accurate. Its dead on for Maddux this year.

Agreed. Maddux hasn't had the bullpen cost him anything this year. When he's won, he deserved to. When he's lost, he deserved to.

Sloppy game...fitting way to end a sloppy series.

My current puzzlement...if Edmonds was healthy enough to do what he did today, then why on earth didn't he make some sort of pinch hit appearance in the first game of the series???

Posted

First: I know sweeping the Cards in St. Lou would have given the Cubs like a serious momentum boost, but taking the series, I believe does the same thing....hopefully. The Cards offense, is going to be pretty much crappy without Pujols, and they know. Today they found a BP pitcher they liked in Maddux. But I am going to say...the Cards are going to have a similar June to the Cubs May. May not be as bad, but I could easily see the Cubs making up 6 games in June. If the Cubs want it.

Second: Carlos Marmol, what can be said about the kid. He reminds me of Frankie Rodriguez. He has the same kind of spunk, fearless and devastating stuff. I think he will be with the Cubs, but a stint in AAA, until they moved either Novoa or Williamson, is prolly what's going to happen. But the Cubs need to have Marmlo focusing on either starting or relieving. Don't pull the crap they did on Zambrano earlier in his career, with Marmol. You want Marmol start, start him. You want to relieve, relieve. Don't bounce him around.

Third: I don't blame Murton, per se, he is a nice enough kid, and he is going ot "respect his elders", but dang, Murton definately needs to developed "selective hearing" and go back to his style of hitting that made him succesful. It's obviously Baker/Cline has NO CLUE about how to teach hitting, so they are making up crap as they go along.

With Clines/Baker coaching him? Are you SERIOUS?

Murton didn't look all that great today, but he was taking a lot of pitches and nearly everything was getting called a strike, even if it wasn't. I wouldn't worry about Murton as a player based on his performance today, but I am worried about what Clines and friends are trying to instill in him.

How many players have been a royal thorn in the side to the Cubs playing against them, then joins the team to be an even bigger thorn?

Blauser

Pierre

I'm sure there a lot more but can't think of them off hand.

Marquis has 8 wins though, which is enough to completely invalidate wins as a pitcher statistic.

I know we're talking about playing against the Cubs, but his '98 homer vs. SF literally saved us that season. :P

Gaetti hit the GW HR in the 1998 one game playoff, thereby instantly revoking him from that list.

Agreed. Maddux hasn't had the bullpen cost him anything this year. When he's won, he deserved to. When he's lost, he deserved to.

He's had a couple no-decisions which he should have won had the offense been able to muster 2 or even 1 run, and he kept the opposing team to 3 runs or less.

Except when our wonderful closer gave up a 3 run homer to Piazza to lose the game.

But yeah, .500 is about where Maddux has been this year. Up and down, up and down.
