It could be serious. It really depends on the severity. An oblique strain could affect how he swings.

I wouldn't rejoice over this. I know how it feels to lose an all-star caliber firstbaseman. Not fun.

Whoops. Just posted this in General Discussion as well.

Anyway, my view is that I can't really rejoice over it, because I know how much it sucks to have the ONE guy on your team who matters most go down to injury, especially from a baseball point of view, Pujols was such an amazing player.

From a Cubs view though, I feel like the field has been leveled and I feel like this is a good opportunity to make some ground up.

P-Distpatch Story

The Cardinals' Albert Pujols, who leads the major leagues with 25 homers and 65 RBIs, left after two innings with a strained right oblique muscle. The Cardinals said Pujols, who pulled up and grabbed his right side while chasing a Ramirez foul pop in the second, would be re-examined on Sunday.

That is all the mention in the entire article so I'm not thinking it is serious. Hopefully the game or two we have without him opens ownership's eyes to how badly we need another serious bat.

I just saw LaRussa's post game comments to the media. He was really vague, but he gave the impression like this was more serious than a nagging injury. Based on everything thus far I think you'll see a DL stint at the least.

La Russa on Pujols (post-game)

It'll be at least two weeks for AP.

And that's optimistic.

Actually, La Russa told us that he'd be happy if it's only two weeks.

"If he's out (only) two weeks I'll buy you dinner the rest of the year," La Russa said.

"I don't think, listening to Dr. Paletta, that in two weeks Albert will be able to go."

Pujols left the stadium early.

that sucks, sort of. too bad the cubs spotted the cardinals 13.5 games. that lineup they have is pretty weak without pujols and edmonds. I was hoping pujols would get 74 though.

wasn't it Nevin that hit the pop up?

No. It was Ramirez.

Agreed. If anyone should get there, it should be him.

But NIMBY ya know? (Not In My Back Yard)

Damn, that sucks. Obviously, seeing the Cardinals falter is not something I'll turn down, but like it's been said, we know all too well the pain of a rock of a player going down with an injury out of nowhere. And Pujols seems like a good guy, and Cardinal or not, he's a masterpiece of a ballplayer. Here's hoping it's not too serious!

Pujols out with strained right oblique

Cardinals slugger likely heading to disabled list

By Matthew Leach / MLB.com

ST. LOUIS -- They've weathered one injury after another the past season and a half, but the Cardinals have never had to do without Albert Pujols for more than a few days. That's almost certainly about to change.

Pujols was removed from the Cardinals' game on Saturday against the Cubs due to a strained right oblique muscle, and it's unclear when he will be able to return. He will almost certainly be placed on the disabled list for the first time in his career, if not Sunday, then no later than Tuesday.

"There is serious concern," said Dr. George Paletta, "and it is the type of injury that we need to evaluate initially and again 18-24 hours later to get a better handle on it."

"He's going to miss a significant period of time," said manager Tony La Russa. "Anywhere from little significant to real significant. We can't tell for another 18-24 [hours]. But it's something we've got to deal with."

I'll repeat: I don't like to see injuries, but it's about time the Cards had to face real adversity.

We've had to play without all 3 of our best players. Let's see how they like it for a change. I've heard alot of nasty comments from Cardinals fans over the past 2 months (not on nsbb). Let's see if they can keep up the peacock crap without Albert to save them.

ESPN reported up to 6 weeks as well. Oh well sucks for the Cards. Good for us and the rest of the teams in the central. Teams took advantage of us because of our injuries, now we have to take advantage of the Cards. Pujols, Edmonds, and Carpenter on the DL, it's like a gift from God. We have to take advantage of this and slowly crawl back into the race. Lets hope the Cards have a June like our May. Our stars are coming back soon and the Cards stars won't be back for a while. If only Barrett didn't have to be suspended.

FYI Carpenter is pitching Monday or Tuesday.

Oh well. It's not like the Cards should be able to give him much run support with Pujols out.

This should be interesting - can any team in the division take advantage of this or will the Cards be able to hold on for a while?

Couldn't agree more. I just want somebody to pass Bonds.

SI Jinx?

Really though ... I hate to see him go down like that. He's an amazing ballplayer and from what I've heard an amazing person as well. I wish him the best.
