.... its time to really take it up the ying yang as the Cubs get ready for Atlanta, St. Louis, Houston, Cincy, Houston, Detroit, and Cleveland before they take a short break from the above .500 teams in order to get spanked by the Twins. Then we stroll to the break with Milwaukee, the Sox, Houston, and another round of Brewers.

By my count, that's 42 games to the break and only 3 against a below .500 team (and the Twins may have a winning record by then too).

I'm gonna put the over/under on wins in those 42 games @ 10.5..... and that's me trying to be optimistic about DLee, Prior, Miller, Pagan all returning and being effective. So if (taking the under) the Cubs manage to go 10-32, they would get to the all-star break with a record of 28-60 (and be on pace to finish 52-110)!

Anyone think 30+ under .500 by the break gets some attention from the Trib?

I want MacPhail's head. Anything less won't be enough.

That would put the Cubs in the top 10 of worst teams ever.

Hey, it's something to shoot for!

The CUBS are 6-21 (.224) over the last month (26 April thru 24 May). Winning .224 of their next 42 games would be 9.4 wins. So you're pretty much right on the same pace.

So many comments.........none appropriate for the board.

I believe the word you wanted was lose.

Oh yeah, my bad. .

LOSE, LOSE, LOSE, LOSE!!

you know what's really bad? this team isn't hideous defensively, so I can't even laugh at how bafflingly bad they are.

Maybe if they hadn't've cornered the market on speedsters, we'd see some EXTRA ADDED PRESSURE ON THE DEFENSE THAT IS SURE TO CAUSE JUAN PIERRE TO GET ON BASE.

Not assuming anything. Takes 1 click of the mouse to change starting pitchers.

Assuming Wood makes his next 3 starts?

As unlikely as it is that Wood makes his next 3 starts, I think it's even less likely that Rusch remains in the rotation for 3 starts.

The Cubs frequently struggle with the weaker teams. We'll probably sweep the Cardinals and Dusty will get his extension then.

the white soxs, padres, dback, giants all completely destroyed us except when Zambrano was pitching

Has all the makings of another brutal month and a half, no?

That's a very impressive schedule you have, Fred.

Since the Cubs have only come from behind twice in the late innings, maybe they should hire the bugler from the Arlington Cemetary to play "Taps" instead of "Take Me Out to The Ballgame" if they are trailing in the 7th inning this week!

Can I mention that even though the All Star break begins after that schedule you listed, after the ASB it doesn't start much better.

vs. NYM, vs. Hou, FINALLY an easier series at Was, then at NYM, vs. STL, vs. ARZ.

It won't get easy again for a loooong time.

i like how people lump pagan in w/ the likes of lee and prior as if his return is going to help the slightest bit.

I didn't mean to imply his return would have much impact, but his injury has been mentioned by Hendry as contributing to the team's struggles.... so as soon as everyone gets back, we can watch the team continue to struggle without excuses.

You don't think they'll come up with new excuses?

The schedule doesn't matter. It's impossible to succeed when #12 is spotting the other team 10 runs before a pitch is thrown.

I'm sure they will -- but that tight rope gets harder to walk once the injury excuse isn't available. I figure that, optimistically, we may get a 3-4 weeks before the break with the "full" roster playing together. If during that stretch, there is little improvement in the results, then maybe we will actually see significant changes to both the roster and management.
