It seems like every beat reporter (including that Baker suck up Zach Zaidman-couldn't stand listening to him today) seems to believe its a foregone conclusion that Baker will be extended, and that they're just waiting for the right time. Does anyone believe that there can possibly be the right time this year? I can't imagine him getting extended unless they somehow are in contention for the division at some point, which I don't see happening. What's the disconnect between the fan and the sportswriter at this point?

At this point, I wouldn't do anything. I wouldn't rule out an extention but I wouldn't guarantee one. I think the smartest thing is to just let the season play out. They should base their decision on how the team plays if/when the combination of Prior/Wood/Lee comes back. It's fully possible that by the time Lee comes back the team is too far out to contend. But if Baker can get the full team to play well the last 2 months of the year then I think an extention should be considered. But if those three guys come back and the team continues to suck, then he shouldn't get an extention.

its not between the fan and sport writer, its the fan (or EVERYONE) and hendry

if he's extended, I don't know what I'm going to do...but it's not going to be good.

Same here, I don't want to think about it, but I can feel the rage boiling inside me anytime I hear about the "inevitable extension." If Dusty is extended, it's very likely I will refuse to go to another Cubs game until he is gone, not in protest of Dusty himself but in protest of the entire organization.

if he gets an extension i will give up on the cubs. been a fan my whole life, but i couldn't deal with that. no one should willingly accept that much stress into their life.

And yet, you will listen in on spring training games, and watch 150+ games anyhow. Yeah, we've all likely said what you just did.

The Cubs will play crappy until Prior, Wood, Lee, Miller come back. Then they will play slighly above .500 ball and finish with like 75 wins. This will get Dusty an extension on the basis that "Dusty managed to recover a sinking ship and finish the season with promise for next year"

yeah i know. even during the current trainwreck, i find myself late for work trying to listen to the last ab of an inning before i get out of my car.

I would say the Cubs have to play at least .550 ball when everybody comes for me to be okay with an extention. Playing .500 isn't good enough.

Me: You know what I'm going to do about this?

Hendry: What?

Nothing! Because if I decide to stop going to games, some other jerk is just going to take my place and it won't hurt you in the bank account anyways, and all I'll be doing is preventing myself from enjoying the sport I love so what I am going to do is piss and moan like an impotent jerk, and then bend over and take it up the tailpipe.

Hendry: You've been a fan of this team for a while haven't you?

Ryan, I quit going 4 years ago. I really don't miss it like I thought I would. I guess the whole "Wrigley" mystique has worn off. I also quit buying the Tribune and cancelled my Chicago magazine when I found out the Trib published it.

The question is, would you be preventing yourself from enjoying Cubs baseball or from enjoying Wrigley Field?

And to answer the question of the thread:

If fair is fair and Hendry gets an extension for assembling this mess, shouldn't Baker get his extension?

I hope he doesn't, though.

The Hendry extension was a big mistake.

I would think that when Prior, Wood, Miller, and Lee come back, the Cubs need to play .700 ball for at least a month for Hendry to offer him an extension. After all, the return of those players eliminates all of Baker's excuses.

Extending Dusty Baker is like rearranging the deck chairs on the Titanic!

It's more like the Captain of the Titanic surviving the wreck, and then asking him to Captain the next ship you're sending out to sea.

Please note, the next ship will be built by the same guy that built the Titanic.

I have been a fan since 1968.

Since then I have lived at least 1000 miles from Wrigley and, until last year, dreamed about when I could travel to see games again. I even thought about retiring to the Chicago area. Yeah, really.

Last year I stopped watching Cubs games at the end of June. This season I decided to stop after sunday's game. I would rather spend the time watching other games, because I still enjoy baseball. I do not enjoy following a team that doesn't care. There's lots of good baseball to watch.

As for Wrigley, well I don't know. Somehow I have survived without it over 30 years. Sometime I'll go to Chicago to take the tour, but not during baseball season.

Confession time: I am a recovering alcoholic. Accepting that was tough, and I believe I have overcome that. I have come to realize I had let one addiction replace another; but I had always thought being a Cubs fan was a healthy addiction. It hasn't been. Perhaps it's different for the rest of you. I wish it was for me.

But here's the thing I can't resolve: As I have followed some of the individual players, and read things about their lives outside of baseball, I have been impressed with the fact that there's some really good people there. I can't imagine how awful they must feel. So while I feel for them, I just have to stop watching.

Ah well, if I leave now, I'll have time to stop for some Krispy Kreme on the way to work. :D

I hate seeing an accident on the side of the road. Espcially if it's bad. But I find myself looking anyway. I have a morbid curiosity. Blood lust. This season looks so bad I can't even comprihend it right now. But I'll continue to watch. I just can't to emotinally involved or i'd drive me to drink.

What's interesting about this is that no one is saying whether Dusty wil except, like its some foregone conclusion. I don't think it is.

on Mike and Mike in the morning on espn they had Buster Olney who said that hendry was just waiting for the Cubs to turn around the season and he was going to extend BakerThe only to get rid of this person is stay away from the ball park, force hendry to make a decision.

I think the only way we can realistically expect Baker to not be back is if he decides he doesn't want to be back and doesn't accept the extension.

I still think there's a chance that he greases the skids for his own exit by saying and doing things that dare Hendry to fire him.

To quote someone else on these boards, two wrongs don't make a right.

Bingo.

Cub fans are screwed.
