If I had any pride and played on this team, I would've found someone to fight by now. Kudos to Barrett for actually giving a crap.

Very likable guy IMHO, not quite Dempster-esque but definitely someone I'd have a drink with.

What was the deal with the exchanging of words between Dave Roberts and Michael Barrett? It looked like Barrett might have said something by the body language and Roberts reaction.

Roberts stole third with 2 outs. Barrett told him that such a play is boneheaded and does nothing to help his team. Roberts took offense.

If Barrett was genuinely peeved, fine. If Barrett's frustration leads him to the belief that he has to look like a tough guy to shake the team up, I don't know how valuable it is to pick on one of the smallest guys in the other dugout.

You seem to be on to something. Barrett also picked on one of the smallest Astros (Oswalt) last year.

I don't think its as premeditated as you say. Look at his quote in today's paper. Kudos to Mike for giving a hoot while his mates continue to go through the motions.

I think he was genuinely peeved and frustrated. I don't think he "chose" to pick on roberts, I think it was a situation that presented itself and barrett used that situation to vent his frustration. It happens, I bet it dies after today.

To be clear, I didn't say it was premeditated. I presented options for discussion.

OK. I am not sure the signfigance of picking on a big guy versus a smaller one then. Who cares, as long as he acts like he gives a you-know-what.

Who is Barett to tell Roberts what to do? If I was Roberts I would tell Barett learn to throw and then tell me when I can run. Barett has been terrible at throwing runners out this year.

Too bad Barrett can't pitch.

Back when the pitching was good, the pitchers had attitude.

Now that just Z and Barrett have attitudes, they're the bad guys.

You mean after he took a fastball to the ribs? I wouldn't call that "picking on".

I agree that it is refreshing to see some of these guys show emotion. Barrett always seems like a "real" baseball guy... like he loves the game and doesn't want to win... not just worried about a big paycheck. He wants to see a good game and a good effort. Dusty did look a little fired up, too, especially after Cedeno's "time out" attempt. It's still a drag....

I can understand Barrett's frustration. He can't stop Roberts (6 SB out of 14 for the year against Barrett, including 3 and 2 in one game) or the other Padres baserunners (3 SB), none of which he has caught stealing. Barrett is a gamer who at least shows he cares and isn't just there to collect a paycheck.

Here's a piece of the AP story on the game regarding the incident.

“I can't really comment on the whole matter right now,” Barrett said of his exchange with Roberts. “It was a really frustrating loss.”

Roberts, who thought Barrett was angry at him for stealing third, insisted he was not trying to show up the Cubs. He also said he has “nothing but respect” for Barrett.

“I respect those guys over there,” Roberts said. “I've known Michael for a long time and he's a heck of a player. I just think they're frustrated over there. They're not playing the baseball they want to play.”

Does nothing to help his team?

Barrett not being able to throw him out certainly didn't help HIS team.

Emotion is fine, to an extent, and I can understand why some would be happy that Barrett is "fired up". But emotion isn't going to win games if you're still not executing.

Havign the players sulking isn't going to help either.

I want to see the players get pissed off! I don't want them to hold depressed pity parties.

The fan's job is to have the pity parties.

I understand, but what's going to help the team more:

1) Barrett throws out Roberts

2) Barrett doesn't throw out Roberts, but gets angry at him?

Personally, I'd rather have execution than emotion.

As was speculated on the broadcast, some of that may have been that Roberts bunted for a single late in a game in SD against the Cubs when the Padres already had a 4-run lead and then stole second. His stealing third in this game likely was icing on the cake to Barrett and Barrett likely told him so.

So it sounds like Barrett wasn't so much angry at Roberts for the way he was playing the game (which seems like the right way, to me)..... but was probably angry because he couldn't stop him.

I think he was pointing out that those three plays were against the "unwritten rules of baseball"

1. you don't bunt for a single late in a game up 4 or 5 runs.

2. you don't steal late in a game up 4 or more runs

3. you don't steal 3rd with two outs when you are up 4 or more runs.

those are all moves that the other team will likely take offense to. and number 3 I don't even understand, on a base hit with two outs, he scores from second or third so why take the chance of getting thrown out at third unless you are trying to pad your stats.

I think the SD broadcasters were right. Roberts has run at will on the Cubs, 6 SB in the past week.

I tend to agree with the thought that emotion without execution is pretty hollow. I don't think Roberts stealing 3rd with a 3-run lead yesterday was out of line at all. I've got a lotta man-love for Michael, don't get me wrong, but he simply looked like a sore loser by jawing at Roberts.
