I definitely agree with Vance-but we all need to think about our rotation next season as well- There is a possibility of no Wood, or Maddux-a hopefully healthy Prior.

So worst case scenario

Z

Prior

Marshall

Guzman

Rusch(puke)

Beast case scenario

Z

Prior

Maddux

Wood

Guzman/Marshall

The only way i give up Gooz or Marshall is if Willis is coming back in the deal-but for Willis AND Cabrera i give them both up-quick

Guzman+Marshall + Murton+J Williams+Sing and any other prospect they want not named Pie. If Murton and continue to build value he would be a great chip to dangle in front of the Marlins in a package for Cabrera/Willis.

If a small package including Z could net us Willis and Cabrera, I might be inclined to pull the trigger so long as that package is not deep in pitching. If Z is ever dealt, I would prefer to see him end up in the AL.

Why would the Marlins want Z back? He'll be making the money that Willis will. So they would not necessarily be gaining salary wise.

I wouldn't want to trade Z. He's on track to be a future HOFer.

I'm not saying they would. I'm merely pointing out that's a deal I would do. Short of that, I wouldn't send him anywhere.

I'd like to hold onto Marshall as well, but if Wood and Prior come back healthy, we have the following pitchers: Zambrano, Maddux, Wood, Prior, Rusch, Marshall,Guzman, and Williams. If Miller returns healthy, that makes nine possible starters. It's from that depth the Cubs could add a bat. It's doubtful a contender is moving an impact bat. That means those teams are going to want a player for beyond this season. Guzman and Marshall make the most sense.

I understand the idea to look toward next season's rotation.

Zambrano and Prior will certainly be in the mix. The Cubs could pick up Wood's option, but if they let him walk they will also have 10-13 million to spend on a FA. The same is true with Maddux. If he walks, nine million is freed up for an acquisition. Having twenty million to spend on FA pitchers should be adequate to add two nice arms to the rotation if the Cubs had to or desired to go in that direction.

Rusch will also be under team control if needed for depth.

Williams, Hill, Marshall, and Guzman could also be options. Ryu should be ready to start at the major league level as well. So even with Maddux, Wood, and Miller not part of the 2007 picture, the Cubs have the depth to trade Marshall if the player they acquire is an impact player. At this point, it's hard to know who that will be.

I was concerned about Marshall, particularly his lack of control early on. However, when he has command of his breaking pitches, he can pitch with anyone. He did an excellent job of keeping the ball down and throwing the breaking pitches for strikes. Being a rookie, we probably won't see that every time, but if he can do those things consistently, he will be able to go 6-7 innings a start and get us to the new Nasty Boys (Eyre, Howry and Dempster).

Good thread, all positive. Some additional thoughts/comments:

1. Don't forget Wade Miller in this equation, and Carlos Marmol may be a factor by next spring. May have 8-9 very good to outstanding options. All in all, we definitely should have plenty of top notch trade chips and still have a surplus should all return to health.

2. I'd love to see the Cubs give Greg any fair amount to continue to pitch as long as he wants in a Cubs uniform. All the reasons I wanted us to get him in 2004 (leadership/presence, solid innings eater, winner) I think are as valid as ever or moreso, and it would be great to see him make a run at #3 in all time wins (374+).

You're right. I did forget about Miller. If he can return to close to his previous form, he would make even another option. This trading deadline could be verrrrry interesting with what could be some rather desirable commodities and plenty of them.

Of Marshall, Guzman, Hill, Williams, Miller and Rusch, 4 or 5 of them could be available to trade. The number will likely be smaller than that, but...

Of Williamson, Wuertz, Aardsma, Ohman and Novoa, 3 or more of them could be traded given the possibility of Rusch and others moving to the pen.

Players like Jones, perhaps Murton and Pierre, one of the 2B, and any of the hitting prospects not named Pie or Patterson can also be added to round out any trade offers.

Some combination of the above players should be able to bring in somebody good to play RF. Shouldn't it?

There are a couple of great articles on Maddux and Marshall on sportsline. The first is on Maddux & Glavine and what each of them thinks about each other and baseball. here's the link -

http://cbs.sportsline.com/mlb/story/9399744/2

2 maddux quotes cracked me up. The first one was about starting off 4-0 if I can quote these the right way.

"It's (four) games, man. It's about having a good year and having success as a team. It's not about (four) games. I'm glad I've pitched good, but you've got to keep fighting, keep playing. If you put yourself in the hunt in September and then have (four) good games ... know what I mean?"

and the 2nd is about pitchers he likes to watch pitch

Maddux on the pitchers he most enjoys watching: "Jake Peavy (of San Diego). Roy Oswalt (of Houston). I like the way they compete. They play baseball as well as pitch. Some pitchers just pitch. They play baseball. Carlos Zambrano (of the Cubs) is fun to watch. Mark Prior, when he's out there, he's fun to watch. And all of the young guys -- I love watching Sean Marshall (of the Cubs), Sergio Mitre (the former Cub now with Florida), John Koronko (the former Cub now in Texas' rotation). It's really easy to root for guys when they're in their first year. It's a whole new life for them."

The marshall article is a little bit older (april 19) but I didn't see anybody post it here.

sounds like a level-headed guy.

Yes, Prior is fun to watch ... when he's out there.

I was amused by "The biggest surprise is the treatment -- they really treat us well here and the fans especially. It's unbelievable. Every day I go out there and listen to the fans, it's unbelievable. The game we won in the eighth inning [on Monday against the Marlins] the other day, I thought it was the most unbelievable place in the world. Just the support here is really cool."

Such a big difference from Jacque Jones!

I sincerely hope Marshall keeps this up and the Cubs don't have to let Wade Miller work his way into things.

If MArshall can consistently get ML hitters out, keep his hiney in the rotation :D

I hate to say it, but I keep thinking Marshall is turning Wade Miller into trade-bait come the trade deadline...

That's a good thing.

It's kinda nice for the cubs to have a guy who comes out of nowhere and suceeds.

I know it's a good thing for the club, but I had been dying to see Wade Miller in cubbie blue for years... :(

Marshall has been very good. IIRC though, he hasn't pitched a lot of innings in a season. I have to imagine that doesn't bode well for his longevity this year.

Am I wrong?

By year:

Year Level IP
2001 NCAA 72

2002 NCAA 85

2003 NCAA 86
2003 A- 73
2003 A 7
2003 TOTAL 166

2004 A 48
2004 AA 29
2004 TOTAL 77

2005 A+ 69
2005 AA 25
2005 TOTAL 94

MARSHALL and MADDUX are tied for 2nd in the league in WHIP. Both have a 0.87 WHIP. Only Capuano is better at this point with a 0.86 WHIP.

(Call that a double play today in the 7th that the ump missed, and Sean woudl be leading the league.)

nice to see marshall pitch so well against florida and pittsburgh. hopefully, he can keep it up against actual lineups. florida ranks 28th in runs and pittsburgh 26th.

with Maddux's resurgance, it looks likely that he will get an extenstion after 2006 ( 2 year?). the rotation for next year might be something like prior , z, maddog, marshall, hill/guzman/miller. along with gallagher & pawlaek in the wings, the starting staff looks to be very solid for years to come.
